Ernst Oppler: A Pioneer of Berlin Impressionism

Ernst Oppler, born in Hanover in 1867, was the son of Edwin Oppler (1831–1880), a prominent German-Jewish architect. His family’s artistic heritage profoundly shaped his own creative path, fostering an environment where art and intellectual curiosity thrived. Alongside his brother Alexander Oppler (sculptor), Berthold Oppler (physician), and Siegmund Oppler (attorney), Ernst received a privileged education at the Academy of Arts in Munich under Nikolaus Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz—influences that would indelibly mark his artistic vision. His early works demonstrated a naturalistic approach, reflecting the meticulous observation characteristic of academic training. However, Ernst swiftly embraced Impressionism’s revolutionary spirit, captivated by James Abbott McNeill Whistler's groundbreaking techniques.
