The Visceral Language of eX de Medici

Born in the rural township of Coolamon, Australia, eX de Medici has cultivated a practice that serves as a profound mirror to the complexities of human existence. Growing up largely in Canberra, her artistic journey began with a focus on performance, installation, and photography at the Canberra School of Art. However, it was her immersion in the world of tattooing—a craft she pursued through an apprenticeship in Los Angeles—that would fundamentally reshape her visual vocabulary. This unique intersection of fine art and the permanent mark of the needle allowed her to develop a style where the delicate precision of line work meets the heavy, often unsettling themes of mortality and political upheaval.

Her work is characterized by a striking duality, often juxtaposing the fragile beauty of the natural world with the brutal emblems of human conflict. In her expansive watercolours and drawings, one might find the intricate detail of Australian flora or the delicate wings of a moth resting upon the cold, hard surfaces of helmets, guns, and skulls. This layering of imagery creates a vanitas tradition for the modern age, where the ephemeral nature of life is constantly confronted by the enduring symbols of violence and power. Through this method, she explores the insidious ways in which systems of injustice and corruption permeate our daily lives.

Symbolism and Social Critique

The iconography within de Medici’s oeuvre is rarely mere decoration; it is a deliberate tool for social and political interrogation. Her motifs—ranging from the swastika to machine guns—are used to destabilize the viewer's sense of security, forcing an encounter with the realities of global disputes, capitalism, and patriarchal structures. She has often utilized her art to protest the endemic violence and political hypocrisy she perceives in the world, using the beauty of her medium to draw the eye toward uncomfortable truths.

This commitment to documenting the human condition led her to significant roles, including serving as an official war artist for the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands. During her time there, she interpreted the layers of colonization and intervention, capturing the historical weight of the islands' pasts through her lens. Her ability to weave together personal observation with broader historical narratives has solidified her reputation as an artist of immense fortitude and intellectual depth.

Legacy and Recognition

Throughout her career, eX de Medici has been a vital force in the Australian arts community, contributing to the establishment of contemporary art spaces and participating in collaborative collectives. Her work has moved through various stages of medium, from early experiments with photocopy and performance to the sophisticated, large-scale watercolours that have become a mainstay of her practice for decades.

The significance of her contribution is reflected in the prestigious institutions that house her work. Her pieces are held in several esteemed collections, including:

• The National Gallery of Australia (NGA)
• The Canberra Museum and Gallery
• Various Australian state galleries
• Private collections worldwide

By bridging the gap between the ephemeral art of tattooing and the permanent archives of national galleries, eX de Medici continues to challenge the status quo, ensuring that the themes of power, conflict, and the fragility of life remain at the forefront of contemporary artistic discourse.
