Born on October 26, 1842, in Ottenbach, Switzerland, Otto Gampert grew up in a household defined by service. He was the second son of Friedrich Gampert, a local physician who practiced in the community. This upbringing placed Otto in a world of steady, practical responsibility from a young age. After completing his medical studies at the University of Zurich in 1867, he began to follow in his father's footsteps. He spent time working as an assistant physician to Friedrich, learning the nuances of the profession through direct experience.
Life in Ottenbach took on a more permanent rhythm in 1868 when Otto took over his father's medical practice. This transition marked a period of stability and professional duty. In 1869, he married Pauline Wegmann, the daughter of a silk dyer's family from Zurich. Their union brought a new chapter to his life as he balanced the demands of a medical practice with the personal joys of building a home and a family.
After completing his medical studies, Otto Gampert sought inspiration through travel, visiting Vienna and Paris. These journeys helped shape his perspective before a profound shift in his life led him away from his medical practice. In 1883, he moved to Munich with his wife and three children, choosing to pursue painting as his full-time profession. This transition marked a period of intense study and formal training under the guidance of Otto Frölicher and Adolf Stäbli.
His time in Munich was defined by a growing interest in the natural world and the changing light of the landscape. His work began to reflect the influence of Impressionism, focusing on the atmosphere of the scenes he observed. By 1888, his paintings were being shown at the Munich Glaspalast, marking his presence in the city's artistic circles. Around 1890, he expanded his technical repertoire by taking up etching, a pursuit that allowed him to explore more detailed, graphic expressions of his subjects.
The pull of his homeland eventually led Otto Gampert away from the bustling art circles of Munich. In 1919, he made the decision to leave Germany and return to Switzerland. He spent his final years in Zurich, a city that offered a different pace of life than the one he had known during his long residency in Munich.
Even in these later years, his creative identity remained multifaceted. He was a man who could move between the precision of an engraver and the fluid touch of a painter. His interest in photography also continued to shape how he perceived the light and landscape around him. He lived through a period of significant change in Europe, yet he remained focused on his various artistic and technical pursuits until the end.
Otto Gampert passed away in Zurich on March 8, 1924. He left behind a body of work that reflected his deep connection to the natural world, captured through his various methods of expression.
The legacy of Otto Gampert's visual art can be found in several public institutions across Europe. His paintings are held in collections such as the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich, which contains his 1904 work, The Inn near Mühldorf. Another landscape, which remains undated, is part of the Reading Public Museum. These pieces offer a glimpse into the scenes he captured throughout his life as a painter.
Beyond his oil paintings, Gampert was a dedicated etcher. His etchings are held in many graphic collections, reflecting the technical skill he developed later in his career. While many of his works were once exhibited in cities like Zurich, Berlin, and Düsseldorf, his presence in modern museums remains tied to these specific collections of paintings and prints.
