From the tender age of thirteen, he worked as a collier, an experience that would later become the very heartbeat of his creative output. This intimate, firsthand knowledge of the arduous labor performed underground provided him with a perspective that few artists could claim, allowing him to capture the essence of the mining community with unparalleled authenticity and emotional weight.
His journey from the pits to the palette began in 1911 through part-time classes at the Swansea School of Art.
