A Life Shaped by the Horizon
Born in Amsterdam in 1645, Albert Meyeringh grew up in a world where art was a family trade. He learned the fundamentals of painting from his father, Frederik, alongside his brother Hendrik. While his brother focused on creating decorative room dividers, Albert found his calling in the vastness of the landscape. His early years in the Dutch Republic provided a foundation of technical skill, but his spirit was drawn toward the warmth and light of the south. Around 1672, he began a long period of travel that would fundamentally alter the direction of his brushwork.
For over a decade, Meyeringh moved through Europe, seeking the light he would later specialize in capturing. His travels took him through France and into the heart of Italy, where he spent significant time in cities like Rome, Naples, Padua, and Venice. This exposure to the Mediterranean landscape changed how he perceived space and light. He was not merely a traveler but a student of the environment, absorbing the classical compositions and the specific atmosphere of the Italian countryside. By the time he returned to Amsterdam around 1684, he was no longer just a student of his father, but a painter with a distinct, international perspective.
The Art of the Italianate Landscape
Meyeringh became known for a specific type of scenery: the Italianate landscape. He moved away from the dark, moody skies often found in Northern European art, opting instead for scenes that felt sun-drenched and classical. His work often featured architectural elements, such as garden houses or belvederes, framed by the soft shadows of large trees. He had a particular talent for depicting the way light reflects off water, creating a sense of stillness and quietude. His compositions often balanced the organic, curving lines of nature with the straight, unyielding lines of stone monuments.
His professional life was marked by several notable engagements and collaborations:
- He worked alongside Johannes Glauber to decorate the dining room of Soestdijk Palace for Mary II of England in the 1680s.
- He was a teacher to students such as Jacob Appel and Jacob Stockmann.
- His repertoire included various subjects, from mythological figures to architectural views.
- His technical range extended beyond painting to include etching and drawing.
In his etchings, such as Paysage Romain, he explored the tension between the permanent and the transient. He used different drawing styles to distinguish between the living, moving elements of a landscape—like the sinuous forms of trees—and the static, unchanging nature of ancient ruins. This method allowed him to communicate a sense of history and the passage of time through simple visual contrasts.
Legacy in Amsterdam
Returning to Amsterdam, Meyeringh settled into a life that combined his artistic practice with the practicalities of the art world. He was a man of the city, becoming a citizen of Amsterdam in 1688. His life was intertwined with the social fabric of the time; he married Maria Schuurmans, the widow of the sculptor Nicolaes Koninck, in August of that year. His work continued to reflect the influences he gathered during his years abroad, particularly the styles of Gaspard Dughet and Nicolas Poussin, which helped define the aesthetic of the Dutch Golden Age landscape painters.
He remained active in the artistic community until his death in Amsterdam in 1714. Through his paintings, etchings, and his role as a teacher, he helped sustain the tradition of landscape painting in the Netherlands. His ability to blend the rugged reality of Northern nature with the idealized beauty of the Italian landscape left a mark on the way his contemporaries viewed the natural world.
