Early Life and Artistic Training
Born in Tallinn on 29 December 1897, Aleksander Mülber did not initially set out to follow the path of a painter. His early years were marked by a departure from the practicalities of commerce; though he had originally enrolled in a school of commerce, the pull of visual expression proved stronger. By 1912, he had made the decision to abandon his commercial studies to pursue art, a choice that would define the trajectory of his life as an Estonian painter and printmaker.
His formal training was shaped by the influential presence of Ants Laikmaa. Under this mentorship, and through his studies at the Estonian Art Society, Mülber began to refine his technical abilities. These formative years provided the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him from the Baltic shores to the studios of Paris.
Artistic Circles and Movements
The early trajectory of Mülber’s career was marked by a notable presence in the burgeoning Estonian art scene. In 1915, he participated in an exhibition of young artists, where his use of pastels in a National Romantic style earned him critical appreciation. This period reflected a specific aesthetic sensibility that would soon undergo a transformation as his personal experiences grew more somber.
His creative life was deeply intertwined with the Vikerla artists' colony on the Pakri islands. Founded by Balder Tomasberg, this group provided a communal space for artistic development. Mülber was a dedicated member of this circle, working alongside colleagues and friends Oskar Kallis and Välko Tuul. He remained an active part of the Vikerla group until 1918, a period that saw his work shift toward a darker tone, likely influenced by the loss of his companions.
Later Years and Death
The trajectory of Mülber's work underwent a profound shift as the turbulence of war and personal loss intersected. During the Estonian War of Independence, he was tasked with a vital mission: he was sent to the front alongside six other artists to rescue and preserve cultural heritage objects and artworks threatened by the fighting. This period of upheaval was marked by the deaths of his close friends, Oskar Kallis and Välko Tuul. In the wake of these losses, his artistic expression took on a noticeably darker note, reflecting the gravity of his experiences and the somber atmosphere of the era.
Seeking a new chapter, Mülber moved to Paris in 1921. He spent his final years in the French capital, continuing his practice as a painter and printmaker. His time in Paris marked the conclusion of a life defined by both the preservation of history and the personal struggle to process change. He died in Paris on 19 May 1931.
Where to See the Works Today
The physical remnants of Aleksander Mülber’s creative output are held within several significant Estonian institutions. His prints, paintings, and drawings are preserved in the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia and the Tartu Art Museum. These holdings offer a window into the technical range of a man who moved between the delicate nature of pastels and the starkness of etching.
Beyond these primary galleries, his presence is felt in the archives of the Tallinn City Museum and the Estonian National Museum. His work also resides within the specialized collections of the Under and the Tuglas Literature Centre. These various repositories ensure that his contributions to the visual landscape of his era remain accessible to those studying the development of Estonian art.
