Early Life, Family and Training
Aleksander Ridali enters the world on 15 August 1910 in Sinalepa, located within the Sinalepa vald of Läänemaa. He is born the son of a farmer, a background rooted in the rural landscape of Estonia. His early years are shaped by this connection to the land before his formal education begins to take hold.
The path toward professional training follows a steady progression through the Estonian educational system. He completes his secondary studies at Läänemaa Ühisgümnaasium in 1930. This marks the end of his general schooling and the beginning of a specialized focus on the visual arts. By 1935, he has graduated from the Riigi Kunsttööstuskool, gaining the technical foundations necessary for a career in art and design.
His formal training reaches its peak at the Riigi Kõrgem Kunstikool, where he continues his studies until his graduation in 1940. This period of intensive study establishes the technical discipline that would later support his multifaceted career as an artist, composer, and educator.
Professional Career and Teaching
The classroom becomes the primary arena for Ridali's influence. Between 1933 and 1938, he holds a position as a drawing and drafting teacher at the Narva City Women's Vocational School. This period of instruction transitions into a long tenure at the Tallinn Teachers' Seminary, where he teaches from 1938 until 1947. The focus shifts toward higher pedagogical training as he moves to the Tallinn Teachers' Institute between 1947 and 1952.
A permanent fixture in the academic landscape, Ridali joins the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute in 1952. He remains there for over two decades, serving as a senior lecturer until 1978. During his time at the institute, he assumes leadership of the department of drawing and graphics from 1960 to 1963. His professional life is defined by this steady commitment to the methodology of art education and the technical instruction of students.
Key Works and Artistic Output
The period between 1936 and 1942 marks a concentrated era of production for Ridali, during which he focused on both paintings and prints. In 1936, he produced the oil painting Jüriöö ülestõus. By 1940, his output shifted toward graphic arts, exemplified by the etching Töö algab.
His creative output eventually transitioned into the realm of pedagogical literature. He authored the instructional book Joonistamine V–VIII kl. in 1961. Later, in 1975, he published Kunstilise kasvatuse metoodilisi põhisuundad, focusing on the methodological foundations of art education.
Academic Research and Legacy
The focus of Ridali’s later years shifted toward the theoretical structures of art education. He moved beyond the studio and the classroom to engage with the scientific foundations of how art is taught. His research centered specifically on the methodology of drawing and art education. This academic pursuit resulted in twelve scientific publications that addressed the mechanics of visual instruction.
In 1972, this trajectory reached a formal peak. Ridali traveled to the Moscow V. I. Lenin State Pedagogical Institute to defend his thesis, titled "Kunstiline kasvatus üldhariduslikus koolis." The defense took place before the scientific council of the faculty of art sciences. This work solidified his standing as an Estonian art pedagogue, bridging the gap between practical artistic creation and the formal study of pedagogical methods.
