Early Life, Family and Training
Alessandro Altamura entered a world defined by the brushstroke. Born in Florence on June 3, 1856, he was the third son of the painter Francesco Saverio Raffaele Altamura and Elena Bùkaras. His lineage was not merely a matter of blood but of professional necessity. Growing up in a household where art was the primary language, he was shaped by the immediate influence of his father, who provided his initial instruction. This domestic apprenticeship established a foundation that would dictate the trajectory of his entire career.
The training Alessandro Altamura received extended far beyond the walls of his family home. He moved from the private lessons of his father into the rigorous environments of established masters. He studied under Domenico Morelli and Edoardo Dalbono, two figures who contributed to the technical development of his hand. This combination of familial instruction and formal study allowed him to refine a style that would eventually focus on landscape, genre scenes, and portraiture. His Greek origins added a layer of cultural complexity to his Italian upbringing, though his professional identity remained firmly rooted in the traditions of his mentors.
Artistic Career and Key Works
Altamura’s output was defined by a disciplined focus on landscape, genre scenes, and portraits. He did not waste time on abstraction, choosing instead to master the specificities of light and setting. His presence in the major exhibition circuits of Europe confirms a professional reach that extended far beyond his Italian roots. In 1880, he brought Veduta di Venezia to Turin, establishing a technical command over Venetian vistas. By 1890, his work Studio di Onde was being presented at the Société nationale des beaux-arts in Paris, proving his ability to compete in the most demanding European art centers.
His later career saw a continued engagement with both grand architectural views and intimate, fleeting moments. He exhibited Crepuscolo d'autunno in Venice in 1901 and returned to the Parisian Salone with L'organo di Pergolesi in 1906. His ability to capture specific atmospheres was further tested in 1910 with Piccolo angolo del Trianon. Even as his focus remained on the tangible, his work carried a weight of presence that commanded attention in international settings, such as the 1904 Italian Exhibition at Earl's Court in London, where he exhibited The parting.
The breadth of his subject matter is best understood through his varied compositions:
- La Ca' d'oro
- Palazzo Papadopoli
- La chiesa di San Salvatore
- Palazzo Marin Faliero
Later Years and Death
The end of Altamura's life was marked by a sudden, violent disruption of his professional existence. During a German air raid in 1918, a bomb struck his Parisian studio. This was not merely a loss of property; the destruction claimed a significant collection of his work, including many pieces belonging to his father. The physical loss of his creative space and the accumulated history held within those walls proved catastrophic for his mental state.
The psychological impact of this event was immediate and severe. Reports indicate that the shock and grief following the destruction of his studio led to a mental breakdown. He reportedly succumbed to madness, unable to process the sudden erasure of his life's work and his connection to his family's artistic legacy. This mental decline preceded his death shortly thereafter in Paris in 1918.
