Early Life and Artistic Training
Alois Arnegger was born in Vienna, Austria, on March 9, 1879. His early years in the city provided the foundation for a life spent observing the nuances of light and landscape. He sought formal instruction at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he worked under the guidance of Robert Russ and August Eisenmenger. These teachers helped shape his technical approach to the canvas, focusing on the specificities of the natural world.
His training was thorough, rooted in the disciplined methods taught at the Academy. Through his studies, he developed the skills of a fine portraitist and a landscape artist. This technical grounding allowed him to move between the intimate details of a face and the broader expanses of the outdoors. His professional path eventually led him to become a scene painter, a role that required a keen eye for composition and atmosphere.
The practice of painting became a family matter. His son, Gottfried Arnegger, also became a painter, following the path laid out by his father. This shared vocation suggests a household deeply immersed in the visual language of the era. Alois Arnegger remained connected to his Austrian roots and his formal training throughout his long life, which ended in Vienna in 1967.
Focus on Austrian and Italian Landscapes
In the early years of his career, Arnegger kept his gaze close to home, painting scenes from his Austrian origin. These early works focused on the familiar landscapes of his native land. However, the direction of his brush changed in the early 1920s when he traveled to Italy. The Mediterranean coast held a specific pull for him, and he spent much of his time there, watching the light change over the water.
He spent a great deal of time capturing the coastal views of the Mediterranean. His paintings from this period include views of Capri, San Remo, Naples, and Castellammare. He also turned his attention to the waters of Lake Como. There is a certain stillness in his depictions of the coast, such as his coastal landscape in Amalfi or his view of the theater in Taormina. He sought out these specific locations, returning to the light and the salt air of the Italian shores.
Alpine Scenes and Later Works
After spending time traveling through Mediterranean regions, Arnegger returned to his homeland. This return brought a shift toward the dramatic shapes of the Alps. He captured the ruggedness of these mountains, often focusing on the Rosengarten Massif in the Dolomites. His brushwork recorded the light as it hit the peaks, such as in his depictions of the Rosengarten Massif at sunset. He also looked toward the snow, as seen in his winter view of Kitzbühel, Austria.
His interest in the landscape extended to the edges of the water. He painted a view of houses and gardens on the edge of Lake Garda, where the mountains meet the calm surface. These works show a focus on the way light and terrain interact in the high altitudes and the lakeside. His later years remained tied to these specific views of the Austrian and Italian landscapes.
