Early Life, Family and Training
Alois Hänisch was born in Vienna to a coffee maker. His early years were shaped by the quiet discipline of private study, beginning with drawing lessons taken under Ernst Juch. These foundational sessions provided the technical grounding that would lead him toward formal academic training in the heart of Austria.
In 1881, he entered the Vienna School of Applied Arts, where he studied under Ludwig Minnigerode. This period of study was followed by a move to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Between 1882 and 1884, he worked under the instruction of Christian Griepenkerl and Siegmund L'Allemand. These years in Vienna allowed him to refine the precision required for his later work as a painter, lithographer, and etcher.
His training eventually took him across the border to the Munich Academy. On April 22, 1885, he began studying there under Nikolaus Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz. This academic path, moving from the applied arts to the rigorous environments of the academies in both Vienna and Munich, provided the technical breadth necessary for his diverse output in print and oil.
Exhibitions and Artistic Recognition
His public presence began in 1891 at the XX. Annual exhibition of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, where he presented the oil painting "Monastery Garden in Autumn". This debut led to a steady presence in major European art circles. He was part of the International Art Exhibitions in Munich in 1892 and again in 1905. His work traveled through Dresden in 1901 and was shown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. He also exhibited in Rome in 1911, Amsterdam in 1912, and Düsseldorf in 1913. Later, in 1918, his work was included in the "Hundred Years of Austrian Art" exhibition in Zurich.
In 1897, he became a founding member of the Vienna Secession. This was not a brief involvement; he remained a member of the Secession for his entire life. His involvement with the group marked a significant period of his career, placing him at the center of the artistic shifts occurring in Vienna during the turn of the century.
Technique and Artistic Style
Hänisch worked across several mediums, moving between the heavy application of oil painting and the precise, fine lines of etching and lithography. His focus often settled on the quiet arrangements of still life or the expansive layouts of the natural world. In his landscapes, there is a specific attention paid to how space is managed. He used the placement of dominant trees to anchor a scene, allowing the arrangement of these forms to dictate the overall atmosphere of the composition.
His hand is visible in the detailed work of his prints. An original etching titled Landscape, published in Vienna by Vervielfaltigende Kunst about 1910 to 1920, shows this technical control. The way he handled the etched lines allowed him to build a sense of place through texture and light. Whether working with the broad strokes of oil or the sharp bite of an etching needle, his practice remained rooted in these observations of the physical environment.
