The Hands of a Maker
Andrea Salvetti lived his life close to the earth and the raw materials that define it. Born in 1967 in Bolzano, Italy, he was a man who preferred the weight of metal and the texture of wood over the abstract. His path was shaped by a deep connection to the Tuscan hills, where he eventually moved to a farmstead with his family in 2004. This proximity to nature was not merely a setting for his life but the very foundation of his work. He was a sculptor, designer, blacksmith, and creator who found meaning in the physical act of making.
His early years showed a remarkable drive. By the age of twenty, he had already opened his first craft space. In 1991, he established his own personal laboratory, a place where he could merge ancient techniques with new technologies. He studied both art and architecture, yet he remained a practitioner who loved to make his hands think. His work often blurred the lines between different disciplines, moving horizontally between sculpture, design, and even performance.
A Language of Metal and Nature
The materials Salvetti chose spoke of the organic world. He was a lover of metal, particularly iron, aluminium, and chrome-plated cast aluminium. Through techniques like lost-wax casting, he could transform hard substances into forms that felt delicate or surreal. His studio was a place of experimentation where oxidized bitumen, marble, and even ceramic ostrich eggs found common ground. He sought to capture the traces of a fragile balance, looking at things like fallen trees or flowers by a river as sources of inspiration.
His creations often took on shapes found in the natural landscape. Some pieces resembled bird's nests, while others looked like stacks of cut wood or tree trunks. He produced furniture that functioned as sculpture, such as:
- The Nido Bronzo chair, made from anodised aluminium and ceramic ostrich eggs.
- The Eccolo chair, crafted from chrome-plated cast aluminium.
- The Monumental L'Albero, a large-scale sculpture made of enameled or painted aluminium.
- Tables and shelves named after elements like Erosion, Palma, and Metacristalli.
This focus on organic forms extended to his interest in food and gastronomy. He explored the relationship between art and eating, viewing food as something that carries cultural and aesthetic value. In projects like "Sculpture for Fire," he used functional pieces, such as a pan for cooking lamb, to connect the act of preparation with the dignity of nature.
A Legacy in the Workshop
Throughout his career, Salvetti’s reach extended far beyond his workshop in Italy. He collaborated with notable figures like Philippe Starck and exhibited his work in significant locations such as the 48th Venice Biennale, the Triennale di Milano, and the Focke Museum in Bremen. His pieces have been featured in international design fairs from Miami to Dubai and are held in the collections of prestigious auction houses including Sotheby’s, Christie's, and Phillips de Pury.
Though he passed away in 2017, the work produced in his laboratory continues to be preserved. His artistic vision remains rooted in a simple philosophy: that true luxury is found in the balance between simplicity and richness. He left behind a body of work that celebrates the earth as a space for living and an incubator for ideas, reminding those who encounter it of the beauty found in the natural world.
