Early Life and Artistic Training
Andres Tali was born on January 9, 1956, in Tallinn. His early schooling began at Tallinn 50. Keskkool, where he studied from 1963 to 1967. He then moved to Tallinn 44. Keskkool, attending from 1967 until 1974.
In 1974, Tali entered the Estonian National Art Institute to begin his formal training in graphic art. He spent the next six years within its walls, focusing on the technical and conceptual nuances of the medium. By 1980, he had graduated from the institute, having completed his degree in graphic art.
Professional Career and Academic Roles
Tali’s professional life has been shaped by a long involvement with the Estonian Academy of Arts. He held several leadership positions within the institution, serving as the dean of the media faculty from 2002 to 2005 and later as the dean of the faculty of fine arts between 2011 and 2016. His administrative work also included a term as vice-rector. Beyond these roles, he has contributed to the academy as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts.
His career outside the academy has been marked by work in publishing and advertising. From 1985 to 1993, he worked at the publishing house Eesti Raamat, where he served as an art editor and eventually as the head of the art editorial department. Between 1993 and 2000, he worked as an AD at the advertising agency Karlson&Ko. Since 2016, he has operated as a freelance artist.
Artistic Technique and Style
The works often emerge as incomplete fragments of a mental landscape. They frequently begin as sketches, pulled from their original context to float in an empty space, waiting for a viewer to fill the gaps. This approach favors the raw essence of an idea over a polished finish. There is a deliberate sense of inadequacy in the technical execution, where the effusive and the unrefined become the primary focus. Through this method, elements of error, glitch, and decay are embraced, using deconstruction and retrieval to build a visual language.
Mysticism finds a place within this process, often manifesting through the use of myth. In his exploration of the myth of St. Rita, the work relies on the power of the sketch to capture a sudden vision or a fleeting emotion. These pieces are not intended to be fully realized objects but rather snapshots of a thought. The resulting imagery relies on reflection and symbolism, leaving the viewer to navigate the space between what is shown and what is suggested.
Notable Works and Recognition
The physical traces of Tali's practice appear in various forms, including a 1990 silkscreen print titled Vase. His output has been recognized through several formal channels, including the receipt of the Grand Prix of the Tallinn Graphics Triennale. He has also been granted the Kristjan Raua award and the Baltic Assembly award. These honors reflect a career marked by steady presence within the Estonian art community.
His contributions to the field have earned him three annual awards from various panels of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. In 2010, the President of Estonia decorated him with the Order of the White Star (IV class). These recognitions follow a long history of involvement in the governing bodies of the Estonian Artists' Union and the Tallinn Graphics Triennale council.
