The Life of Angelo Collen Hayter
Born in 1819, Angelo Collen Hayter entered a world deeply connected to the visual arts through his lineage. He was the son of Sir George Hayter, a man whose presence in the circles of British portraiture was well established. While his father navigated the complexities of high society and royal commissions, Angelo Collen Hayter followed a path that combined the creative with the administrative. He lived a life that spanned the changing landscape of the nineteenth century, eventually passing away in 1898.
His pursuits were not limited to the canvas alone. Angelo Collen Hayter balanced his identity as a painter with the responsibilities of a civil servant. This dual existence suggests a man who moved between the quiet, disciplined world of bureaucracy and the expressive realm of art. He was a figure of his time, navigating the social and professional expectations of Victorian England while maintaining his connection to his family's artistic legacy.
Where to See His Works Today
While his life was spent navigating the roles of painter and civil servant, the physical traces of his presence are found in the archives of London. One may encounter his likeness within the collections of the National Portrait Gallery. There, a portrait captures his image through the medium of an albumen carte-de-visite, a delicate form of photography that emerged during his lifetime. This specific piece, identified by the reference NPG Ax14935, offers a glimpse into the man as he appeared in the early 1860s.
The creation of this portrait was the work of Caldesi, Blanford & Co, photographers who were active during that era. It remains a singular record of his personhood, preserved within the gallery's holdings. This photographic likeness provides a quiet connection to his history, held within the halls of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
