      A Life in Madrid

Antonio Fernández Arias arrived in the world around 1614, born in Madrid to a father from Galicia. His path into the world of painting began with a remarkable early talent. As a young boy, he studied under Pedro de las Cuevas, and by the age of eleven, he was already assisting with the painting of the main altar for the chapel of Carmen Calazo in Toledo. This early start meant that by his fourteenth year, he had secured his first significant commission: a retable for the Shod Carmelites in Toledo, though that specific work has since been lost to time.

As he grew into adulthood, his reputation within the Spanish capital expanded. By the age of twenty-two, he was recognized as one of the more prized painters in Madrid. His skill brought him into the service of the Conde-Duque de Olivares. In 1639, he joined a group of artists, including Francisco Camilo and Alonso Cano, to decorate the Golden Hall of the Royal Alcázar in Madrid. This period of his life was marked by high-profile responsibilities and the opportunity to work alongside the most significant figures of his era.

The Work of a Devoted Painter

In 1645, Arias opened his own studio in Madrid, which became a center for numerous religious commissions. Much of his output was dedicated to the needs of various religious orders and convents. He often worked on series of canvases that depicted the Passion of Christ or the lives of saints, providing devotional images for cloisters and altars. His hands touched many different sacred spaces, from the Convento de las Carboneras to the monastery at Carvajalas in León.

Some of his surviving works include:

      • Carlos V y Felipe II (1639), which remains the only preserved piece from the decoration of the Golden Hall at the Royal Alcázar.
      • La moneda del César (1646), currently held in the Museo del Prado.
      • Christ Washing Peter's Feet (1657), located in the Museo de Pontevedra.
      • Virgen con el niño Jesús (c. 1655), found in the Museo del Prado.

      Final Years and Legacy

Despite the steady stream of commissions he received throughout his career, the end of his life was marked by hardship. Arias lived through the height of the Baroque period in Spain, leaving behind a body of work that remains in several important collections, including the Museo del Prado and the University of Granada. He passed away in 1684 at the General Hospital of Madrid, dying in poverty.

His life reflects the reality of many artists of his time, where early brilliance and royal patronage could coexist with a difficult conclusion. He was known to be a cultivated man, a fact suggested by the library he left behind, distinguishing him from the typical artist of the seventeenth century. His contributions to Spanish religious painting continue to be studied through the canvases that survived the centuries.
