A Life Shaped by Loss and Light
Baruch Lopes Leão de Laguna entered the world in Amsterdam on February 16, 1864, into a Sephardic family with roots in Portugal. His early years were marked by a profound silence, as both of his parents passed away when he was only eleven years old. This loss led him to an orphanage run by the Portuguese Synagogue of Amsterdam, a place that would unexpectedly become the cradle of his talent. Amidst the structured life of the orphanage, he began making sketches, finding a way to communicate through lines and shapes when words were perhaps not enough.
By the age of fourteen, his aptitude for art led him to the Quellinus Art School, where he trained as a decorative painter. He later moved on to the National Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Arts, studying under August Allebé at the Rijksacademie. These formative years in Amsterdam provided him with the technical foundation that would support a productive sixty-year career. At seventeen, having left the orphanage, he opened his own studio in the Plantage neighborhood of the Jodenbuurt, beginning a life of independence built upon his craft.
The Laren Years and Artistic Focus
In 1895, Baruch married Rose Asscher, the daughter of a London diamond cutter. Their lives eventually led them to Laren and Blaricum, where he became part of the Larense School. This period saw him engaging deeply with the local surroundings, often painting peasant interiors that captured the quiet rhythms of daily life. His subjects were frequently found in the middle of simple, repetitive tasks, such as:
- Peeling potatoes
- Sewing and spinning
- Cutting vegetables
While he gained recognition for his portraits of notable figures like Hendrikus Colijn and Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis, his domestic life also influenced his brush. As he cared for his wife during times when her health was poor, he turned his attention to the delicate beauty of flowers. These still lifes in vases became a significant part of his output, offering a quiet, focused counterpoint to his more social portraiture and genre scenes.
A Tragic End
The later years of Baruch's life were shadowed by the darkness of the Second World War. Following the German occupation, he attempted to maintain a low profile, finding refuge on an isolated farm in Laren with the help of friends. This period of hiding was a time of great tension and uncertainty. However, the safety of the farm could not protect him indefinitely. In 1943, Baruch and Rose were tracked down and deported. He was murdered in Auschwitz later that year, and his wife followed him shortly after. His life and work remain connected to the history of the Jewish community in Amsterdam, a legacy preserved through the paintings he left behind.
