The Life and Artistic Journey of Béla Bacskai
Béla Bacskai was a painter born in Prša, Slovakia. His formal artistic training began at the Pozsony School of Fine Arts between 1955 and 1962, where he studied under masters such as Csemiczky László, J. Želibský, V. Hložník, and P. Matejka. Before his academic studies, he trained as a locksmith and caster at the factory in Fülek in 1953. Throughout his life, he resided in various villages including Persa, Dereska, Egyházasbáston, and Guszoná, often following his mother and sister. He established his studio in a distinctive long peasant house in his family home, where he created much of his work, particularly his watercolors and graphics.
Artistic Style and Exhibitions
Bacskai's unique artistic world emerged in the early 1970s. His work frequently focused on the landscape of Guszoná, capturing the rolling hills and valleys of the Gömör-Nógrád region. His paintings often featured a high horizon and undulating surfaces that conveyed the primal force of the earth. In his later years, his style evolved to dissolve the constraints of space and relief, depicting the landscape with a dynamic, swirling energy and a focus on the vibrations of the atmosphere. While he worked in oils, drawings, and graphics, his watercolors are considered his finest achievements.
His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and is held in various collections, including:
