Early Life, Family and Training
Born in Den Haag on December 17, 1886, Ben Viegers entered a world shaped by craftsmanship and manual labor. He was the son of Johanna Engelina Hulzing and Petrus Jacobus Viegers, a man who worked as a coachman. This domestic setting provided an early, practical introduction to the manipulation of materials. Before he ever picked up a brush for fine art, the young Ben learned the fundamentals of drawing, the mixing of pigments, and the art of decoration within the workshop of his maternal grandfather, a carriage builder. These formative years in a trade environment instilled a disciplined understanding of color and form.
His formal transition into the world of fine art began in the early 20th century. During the 1903-1904 academic year, he enrolled in the first-class education of the day course at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. It was within these academic walls that his technical skills met formal instruction. During this period, he formed a significant connection with Charles Dankmeijer, who acted as both a teacher and a friend. This mentorship helped guide his early development as he moved from the practicalities of a workshop to the structured rigors of professional artistic training.
Artistic Style and Technique
The evolution of his brushwork reflects a significant departure from his early influences. While his initial works were strongly shaped by the muted, somber tones of the Hague School, his palette underwent a gradual transformation. The heavy grays of his formative years eventually gave way to a Mediterranean colorite, characterized by a sense of clear, luminous light. This shift allowed for a more spirited interaction between color and atmosphere.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, he developed a short, impressionistic touch that defined his mature period. He moved away from tonal subtlety toward a more assertive use of color. Sizzling hues became his signature, specifically the use of cobalt blue, orange, and sea green to define his subjects. These colors provided a sharp contrast to the landscapes and scenes he encountered, lending a certain vitality to his compositions.

Life and Activity in the Netherlands
His professional presence expanded steadily through the early decades of the twentieth century. Following an exhibition in Antwerp in 1907, his work reached as far as Batavia in 1910. By 1921, he had established himself within the local art community as a member of the Hague Kunstkring. During this period, he also sought inspiration beyond Dutch borders, traveling through Brittany alongside his friend Henk van Leeuwen van Oudewater to capture the light of the region.
A significant shift occurred in 1938 when he and his wife moved from The Hague to Nunspeet. Settling in a neglected building on the Brinkersweg that he personally renovated, he found a profound connection to the Veluwe. The local landscape and the rhythms of the farming population became constant sources of inspiration for his canvases. This connection to the land remained a central theme in his life and work.
The disruptions of the Second World War necessitated several moves. He resided in Castricum at the start of the conflict before relocating to Hilversum. In 1943, he eventually returned to Nunspeet, the place where he had spent much of his creative life.
Later Years and Death
The final chapter of Viegers' life was deeply rooted in the landscape of Nunspeet. He spent his later years there alongside his wife, Josina Maria Jacobs, who lived until 1977. His connection to the region remained a defining feature of his existence, as the local environment continued to provide the quietude necessary for his continued practice. Even as the world changed around him during the mid-century, his presence in the Veluwe remained constant.
He passed away in October 1947 at the age of 60. His death occurred in Nunspeet, the place where he had established his home and his creative focus. The town maintains a physical connection to his memory through a street named in his honor, ensuring his name remains part of the local geography.
The cultural impact of his work was recognized long after his passing. In November 2014, the Noord-Veluws Museum in Nunspeet held an exhibition featuring 130 of his works. This retrospective allowed for a significant gathering of his output, offering a comprehensive view of the scenes he spent a lifetime capturing.
