      Early Life, Family and Training

Boris Fogel was born on 18 January 1872 in Buynaksk, Russian Empire. He was the son of a career military colonel, a man whose life was defined by the campaigns of the conquest of the Caucasus. This disciplined upbringing was interrupted by tragedy; following the death of his father, Boris moved with his mother to Tbilisi. It was in this new environment that the first inclinations toward a visual life began to surface.

While navigating his high school years, Boris Fogel sought out the private studio of A. Zakharov to refine his drawing skills. His interests were diverse and his path was not immediately certain. In 1891, he moved to Moscow and enrolled in the medical faculty at Moscow University. Even as he pursued the study of medicine, his hand remained drawn to the canvas. He spent about a year engaged in the private studio of Leonid Pasternak, a period that helped solidify his commitment to the arts over a medical career.

      Artistic Education and Training

Fogel’s formal artistic development took him from the private studios of his youth to the established academies of Europe. In 1896, he traveled to Paris, where he spent a year refining his technique at the Académie Julian. This period of study provided a foundation that he would carry back to the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. Between 1897 and 1902, he underwent rigorous training in the Russian capital, working under the guidance of Ilya Repin and P. O. Kovalevsky.

His academic progression culminated in 1902 when he graduated as an artist of painting. For his final graduate work, he produced a piece titled «An Evening». This period of intense study helped shape the technical proficiency that would define his later professional life and his eventual transition into academia.

      Teaching and Professional Career

After completing his formal studies at the academies, Fogel turned his attention toward the instruction of others. His professional life began in earnest in Tbilisi, where he served as a teacher following his graduation. During this period, he became a constant presence in the local art scene, participating in every exhibition organized within the city. This early engagement established him as a steady figure in the regional artistic community before his eventual move to the more formal academic circles of the north.

The later decades of his life were defined by a deep connection to the academic institutions of Leningrad. In 1934, he transitioned to the Repin Institute of Arts, where he remained a dedicated educator until his death in 1961. His influence extended through his role as a professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he helped shape the technical foundations of his students. His standing within the professional community was further solidified by his membership in the Leningrad Union of Artists, a position that reflected his integration into the Soviet artistic establishment.

      Technique, Style and Themes

Fogel’s visual language was defined by a preference for bright colors that brought a sense of immediacy to his compositions. His approach to the canvas favored clarity and light, often capturing the specific atmosphere of the locations he visited. As a member of the Leningrad School of Painting, his work adhered to the traditions of that movement while maintaining a personal focus on the interplay of light and color.

The sea acted as a recurring protagonist throughout his career. His landscapes frequently returned to maritime themes, seeking to translate the movement and light of the water onto the surface. He found particular inspiration in the coastal vistas of Batumi, the Bosphorus, and Venice, using these settings to explore how sunlight interacts with the sea. Whether working in oil or gouache, he remained preoccupied with the way these environments could be distilled through a controlled, luminous palette.
