      Early Life, Family and Training

C.V.M. Jensen entered the world on 12 June 1819 in Ringsted, Denmark. He was born into a family of established standing; his father, Niels Jensen, served as a clerk and later held the position of war council official. His mother, Florentine Jacobine Norup, provided the domestic foundation for a childhood that would eventually diverge into two distinct professional paths.

The impulse toward the visual arts appeared early in his development. Seeking to formalize this interest, he traveled to Copenhagen to visit the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. It was there that he sought the discipline required to master the craft of painting. By 1839, his commitment to the medium was evident as he became a student at the academy's model school, focusing his attention on the study of form and light.

      Artistic Career and Key Works

Jensen’s engagement with the visual arts was a concentrated chapter of his life. During the late 1830s, he focused his attention on the study of landscape and portraiture, exhibiting several drawings and landscapes between 1839 and 1842. His work from this period often centered on the architectural and natural features of the Danish countryside, capturing the specific character of local estates.

A significant achievement of this brief period was the creation of Hovedbygningen på Gisselfeld Kloster, a work produced between 1834 and 1839. This painting gained early recognition when it was exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1839. The piece remains a notable example of his ability to translate the structure of a grand manor into oil on canvas. His interest in the Gisselfeld area was further reflected in Herregården Gisselfeld, painted in 1839.

      Medical Career and Professional Life

In 1842, Jensen made the decisive choice to abandon his pursuit of the arts, turning instead toward the rigorous discipline of medicine. This transition marked a significant shift in his life's direction, moving from the studio to the clinical sphere. By 1844, he had become a medical student, a path that would lead him into the direct service of his country. During the Three Years' War in 1849, he served as an assistant surgeon, gaining practical experience amidst the hardships of conflict.

His academic progression was marked by notable achievement and steady advancement. Following his medical examination in 1851, he was awarded the University of Copenhagen's gold medal in 1852. This recognition preceded his appointment as a prosector at the Surgical Academy in 1853. His professional life eventually found a stable rhythm on the island of Funen, where he practiced as a physician for over three decades.

      Later Years and Death

Following his return from his travels abroad, Jensen entered a brief period of service as an assistant surgeon in the Navy. This maritime tenure was short-lived, however, as his professional path soon shifted toward a more settled existence. In 1858, he accepted a position as a doctor on the estate of Count Carl Wedell on Funen.

This appointment led him to reside at Liljedal, near Ejby, where he would remain for the remainder of his life. For more than thirty years, he practiced medicine from this residence, becoming a fixture of the local community. He remained a physician in this capacity until his death on 13 August 1882 at Liljedal, within the parish of Ørslev on Funen.

Where to See the Works Today

The remnants of Jensen's brief foray into painting are preserved within several significant Danish institutions. His most prominent work, Hovedbygningen på Gisselfeld Kloster, is held by the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen. This oil on canvas, which was acquired by the museum on 31 December 1839, remains a central part of the national collection.

Other pieces from his early period are distributed among specialized repositories. The Thorvaldsens Museum maintains Herregården Gisselfeld, a work from 1839. Additionally, a self-portrait dating from 1838 is held by the Medicinsk Museion, offering a rare glimpse into the artist's own likeness before he turned his focus toward medicine.
