      Early Life, Family and Training

Carl Rahtjen enters the world on 12 December 1855 in Bremen, Germany. He is the third son of Captain Johann Rathjen. His early years are shaped by the maritime atmosphere of his father's sphere, yet his path deviates from the sea. At his father's request, he travels to England to train as a carpet merchant. In this foreign setting, he spends his time drafting intricate patterns for carpets, a skill that demands precision and a keen eye for design.

The merchant's life in England gives way to formal artistic study. Between 1874 and 1876, Carl Rahtjen moves to the Düsseldorf Academy. Here, he studies under the instruction of Professors Müller and Lauenstein. The focus shifts from commercial patterns to the disciplined study of art. This period provides the technical foundation necessary for his future as a landscape painter.

The training intensifies in Stuttgart. From 1876 to 1880, he enters the Stuttgart Art School. He works as a master student under Carl Ludwig. This apprenticeship marks a definitive transition, moving him away from the mercantile world and into the rigorous technical demands of professional painting. By the end of this period, the merchant's apprentice has become a dedicated student of form and light.

      Life in Berlin and Hamburg

The transition from Stuttgart to Berlin occurs around 1879 or 1880. Moving alongside his teacher, Carl Ludwig, Rahtjen enters the metropolitan art scene. He establishes himself within the Berlin Artists Association, a period of professional integration that lasts for over a decade. In 1887, his personal life shifts when he marries Elisabeth Völschau. This decade in Berlin marks a period of sustained residency before the move toward the Elbe.

By 1894, the Berlin chapter ends. Rahtjen settles in Hamburg-Altona, a move that anchors his later career in the region. His involvement in the local art community becomes institutionalized through leadership and membership. He becomes a founding member of the Altona Artists Association and maintains an active presence as a member of the Hamburg Artists Association. His life becomes deeply intertwined with the civic and artistic structures of these growing urban centers.

      Key Works and Artistic Recognition

Public recognition arrives in 1890 when five of his paintings gain acclaim for their connection to Nikolaus Lenau’s Schilflieder. This period marks a significant shift in his standing within the German art scene. By 1892, his work moves from private study to the public eye at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, where his illustrations for Lenau’s Postillion are displayed. The institutional value of these illustrations becomes clear in 1904, when the Reichspostmuseum acquires them for its collection.

His output remains focused on the nuances of the landscape. One notable piece, Blühender Feldrain, exists as an oil on cardboard, measuring 60 x 81 cm. His ability to translate specific environments into paint defines his professional reputation during these decades.

      Later Years and Death

The First World War brings a shift in focus for Rahtjen. He moves into administrative and organizational spheres, taking on various functions within the Altona Artists Association. His involvement in the association marks a period of civic engagement alongside his continued presence in the local art scene. His paintings find a permanent home in the Altonaer Museum, securing his place within the regional artistic record.

The final chapter of his life unfolds in the shadow of the war's end. He dies in Hamburg on 23 December 1919. His life, which began in Bremen, concludes in the neighboring city of Hamburg. He leaves behind a body of work that remains tied to the landscapes and institutions of the German coast.
