      Early Life, Family and Training

Charles Vezin was born on April 9, 1858, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a household shared with his parents, Charles Vezin and Caroline Vezin, née Kalisky. His brother, Frederick Vezin, also followed a path into painting. Before turning to the canvas, Charles attended the Pennsylvania Military Academy.

His formal training began later in life, when he sought instruction at the Art Students League. There, he studied under William Merritt Chase, John Henry Twachtman, and Frank DuMond. These years of study shaped the way he approached light and form in his later years.

      Artistic Career and Style

Vezin did not begin his life as a painter. He spent his earlier years building a successful drygoods firm in New York, only turning to the canvas at the age of 40. He trained under William Merritt Chase, John Henry Twachtman, and Frank DuMond at the Art Students League. For two decades, he split his time between the demands of his business and his brushes, painting every morning and evening before eventually committing to the work full-time in 1919.

His approach was rooted in impressionism and the practice of plein-air painting. He found his subject matter in the shifting light of New York’s skyline and its busy harbors. Rather than following the Modernists who focused on human depravity and decadence, Vezin looked toward the landscape. He sought to capture the quiet beauty of natural scenes alongside the steady progress of urban industry. His work often focused on the way light interacted with the structures of a growing city.

In his depictions of the harbor, he used color to bridge the gap between the sky and the water. He often paired the blues and violets of the sea with echoing tones in the atmosphere above. His compositions frequently used the dark, rectangular shapes of buildings to frame a central subject, such as a skyscraper rising through the mist. This method allowed him to find a sense of movement and energy within the rigid forms of the urban environment.

      Professional Leadership and Exhibitions

Vezin moved through the institutional layers of the New York art scene with a steady presence. He held the presidency at the Art Students League of New York and the Salmagundi Club. His influence extended into the Brooklyn art community, where he served as president of both the Brooklyn Society of Artists and the Brooklyn Art Association between 1911 and 1915. These roles placed him at the center of the organized efforts to manage and promote local artistic life.

His work was frequently shown in the halls of the Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, and the Corcoran Gallery. Beyond the city, he was a regular presence in the Artist Colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He spent time there working alongside other painters, finding a place within that specific community of creators.

      Key Works and Collections

One of his notable pieces is Evening Skylight from the Water, an oil on wood panel. This work was painted by 1914, a time when the panel appeared in a photograph of the Griswold House dining room in the magazine Country Life in America. The scene captures the Singer Building as it rose above its neighbors, using the shadowy rectangles of buildings to stage the main event against the blues and violets of the water and sky.

His paintings have found permanent homes in several institutions. The New York Historical Society and the Hudson River Museum both hold his works. His pieces are also part of the collections at the High Museum of Art and the Montclair Art Museum. Additionally, the Florence Griswold Museum maintains his work within its holdings.
