Early Life and Artistic Training
Christoph Knecht was born in 1983 in Karlsruhe. His formal training began in earnest when he arrived at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he remained from 2004 until 2012. During these years, he worked closely under the guidance of Peter Doig, eventually becoming his Meisterschüler. This period in Düsseldorf provided the foundation for his technical development and his approach to the canvas.
His education extended beyond the borders of Germany. Between 2009 and 2010, Knecht spent time at the Chengdu Fine Arts College of SCCM in Chengdu, P.R. China. This period of study in China was followed by a stay in London in 2011, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. These movements through different cities and academic environments shaped the way he observes the world around him.
Technique and Artistic Style
Knecht works across a wide range of materials, moving between the precision of etching and aquatint to the weight of bronze casting and ceramics. His practice involves a heavy use of oil, acrylic, ink, and watercolor, often applied to canvas or integrated into sculptural forms. He frequently employs traditional production processes, such as working in bronze or ceramics, to ground his imagery. There is a specific interest in how objects move through space and time; he often incorporates mass-produced, throw-away items like paper plates or paper doilies into his compositions. By bringing these everyday objects into his work, he grants them a longer shelf life and removes the usual hierarchies between fine art and the disposable.
His visual language relies on the unexpected pairing of disparate elements. In his paintings, biomorphic plant shoots often conjoin with human body parts. He layers these organic forms against ornamental patterns or the precise lines of botanical and medical engravings. This method creates a sense of tension between the natural and the structured. His work often explores the intersection of visual codes and the aesthetics of the everyday, using metaphors to navigate cultural phenomena. In some instances, he uses Arabic script within his compositions, where the letters function as both text and shadow, such as in his series involving the phrase "Inshallah."
Exhibitions and Professional Activity
His professional life has been shaped by a steady presence in academic and gallery spaces. Between 2012 and 2017, he held a teaching assignment for painting at the Institute of Fine Arts, TU Dortmund. This period of instruction coincided with a series of exhibitions in various European institutions. In 2014, his work was presented at the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, Netherlands. By 2015, his practice moved into the MMK – Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, and he also exhibited at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art in Israel during that same year.
The artist's engagement with specific locations often informs the themes seen in his exhibitions. His time in Israel led to the creation of works that explored the socio-political landscape through a more poetic lens, moving away from direct political affiliations. In 2019, he held an exhibition at the Van der Grinten Galerie in Cologne, Germany, which ran from September 7 to November 2. This exhibition highlighted his ability to work with diverse materials, including ceramics and various print processes, often integrating mass-produced objects into his displays.
Key Works and Series
Knecht’s practice often moves between the small and the expansive. In his installation Europa, he used 3000 hand-painted and kiln-fired tiles to transform a space into a cohesive arrangement of friezes and tableaux. This work reflects a way of building a larger environment through many individual, repetitive pieces. His interest in specific locations also led to the creation of the Ramallah Cat series. These watercolors were produced during a residency in Tel Aviv and depict cats as they move across or look over the separation wall.
The artist also works with large-scale canvases using oil and acrylic. In 2016, he produced Mashallah and Subhan-Allah, both using these combined media. His 2018 work Universal Heritage belongs to the Plant of Opportunities series. This series explores themes of transition and movement through its imagery.
