      Early Life, Family and Training

Clara Wulffaert was born in Ghent, Belgium, on February 19, 1808. She grew up as the third daughter in a large, established family. Her parents, Jean Louis Joseph Rooman and Claire de Genellis, had been married in 1800, and she was raised within this patriarchal household in Ghent. Her upbringing was shaped by the steady rhythms of family life in a bustling Belgian city.

Her personal life became closely intertwined with the art world when she met Adrien Wulffaert. On January 25, 1835, the two were married in Bruges. Adrien was a painter himself, and this union brought a shared passion for visual expression into their home. Together, they built a life that would eventually include five children: Paul, Gabrielle, Hippolyte, Adolphe, and Georgine. One of her sons, Hippolyte, would follow in the family tradition as a painter.

      Artistic Career and Exhibitions

Clara Wulffaert found her footing within the competitive art circles of Belgium, establishing herself through a steady presence in various salons. Her early recognition came in 1832, when she participated in a painting competition at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. She earned the first prize for her work, a success that helped define her early professional standing. Her focus remained largely on genre scenes, capturing the quiet, everyday moments of human life that resonated with contemporary audiences.

As her career progressed, she became a regular participant in the major exhibitions of the era. She brought her paintings to the Salon de Gand in 1838 and later appeared at the Salon de Bruxelles in 1839. These exhibitions allowed her to share her specific vision of domestic and social life with a wider public. Her ability to navigate these formal settings marked her as a dedicated professional in a period when women's roles in the arts were often strictly defined.

      Notable Works and Subjects

Clara Wulffaert found her voice through the quiet intimacy of genre scenes, often focusing on the tender connections between people. Her early success was marked by Mars and Venus, a work from circa 1832 that explored themes from classical fable. This piece, which earned her a first prize at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, depicted Venus in a moment of profound grief near the tomb of Adonis, a scene set within a garden of cypress, myrtles, and roses.

As her career progressed, her brush often turned toward the domestic sphere and the complexities of human relationships. In about 1835, she produced A Mother’s Lesson, a work that would later find a place in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand. This interest in maternal and familial bonds continued in other pieces, such as Jeune mère avec ses trois enfants. She also captured moments of shared connection, seen in her 1836 painting Complicité.

Her subjects frequently touched upon the everyday realities of life, sometimes highlighting the more vulnerable aspects of existence. This is evident in works like Les Petits mendiants et leur chien, where she turned her attention to the lives of those on the margins. Through these various subjects, from mythological sorrow to the simple presence of a mother and her children, she maintained a steady focus on the human condition.
