The Weight of the Banal
Born in Lindau am Bodensee, Dieter Krieg developed a visual language that refused the comforts of traditional beauty. His work did not seek to decorate, nor did it aim for the polished perfection of the academic. Instead, he turned his attention to the discarded and the mundane. He found substance in the most unremarkable objects: a bucket, a bottle, a slice of meat, or a simple cushion. These were not mere studies of form, but subjects that carried a heavy, almost physical presence on his large-scale canvases. He approached the world with a certain grit, favoring a style that was expressive and often raw, avoiding the easy allure of the fashionable or the purely decorative.
His early training took place between 1958 and 1962 at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe, where he studied under HAP Grieshaber and Herbert Kitzel. These mentors instilled in him a skepticism toward the prevailing trends of the art market, encouraging a path that was individual rather than dictated by the movements of the day. This independence defined his career. He did not belong to a specific school of thought, yet his presence was felt in the way he manipulated space and matter, creating works that were highly abstracted yet never entirely devoid of the physical world.
Form and Fragment
The evolution of his technique was marked by a shift from the human figure toward the autonomy of the object and the word. In his earlier years, he often depicted the human torso, frequently stripped of the head, placed within various seating arrangements. As his practice matured, the human form gave way to a more fragmented reality. He began to use color and texture to transform the banal into something monumental. His method was physical; he applied thick, pastose layers of paint, often using scraping and scratching techniques to build a surface that felt weathered or wounded. This tactile approach ensured that the act of painting remained central to the work itself.
By the 1970s and 1980s, the subject matter became increasingly surreal in its arrangement, though not in its intent. He would place objects in dissonant relationships—a walking stick next to a shoe, or a flower resting on a cushion—creating compositions that defied easy logic. Eventually, language entered his work as a visual element. Words and text fragments were integrated into the paintings, sometimes acting as signals or messages, and at other times existing simply as shapes that disrupted the visual field. This integration of script and image further blurred the line between the representation of a thing and the thing itself.
A Life of Instruction and Recognition
Beyond the studio, Krieg’s influence was felt through his long tenure as a professor at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, a position he held from 1978 until 2002. His teaching was an extension of his artistic philosophy, fostering a generation of artists who, like him, sought to escape the constraints of established styles. His professional life was marked by significant recognition, including the Deutscher Kunstpreis der Jugend in 1966 and the Hans-Thoma-Preis in 1993. He was a participant in major international exhibitions, such as documenta 6 in Kassel and the Venice Biennale, where he represented the German Pavilion in 1978.
His passing in 2005 left behind a body of work that remains difficult to categorize. He occupied a space between the figurative and the abstract, the real and the imagined. His paintings do not offer easy answers or cheerful sentiments; instead, they present the world in all its awkward, unvarnished reality. Through his focus on the small, the broken, and the everyday, he achieved a way of seeing that transformed the insignificant into something of profound, if unsettling, weight.
