The Artistic Practice of Dieter Villinger
Dieter Villinger is a German painter born in Bad Bergzabern. His creative process is a profound investigation into the nature of paint application and the creation of relief-like, textured surfaces. Working with a brush and viscous colored matter, Villinger works the pigment from the edges of the canvas toward the center onto unprimed surfaces. In some instances, the volume of paint applied is so significant that it is moved by gravity, resulting in vertical color gradients that intersect with horizontal traces of movement. Through this method, the act of painting remains visible on the canvas, illustrating the power of color as both the medium and the subject of the work.
Education and Recognition
Villinger’s formal training began with studies in graphics at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel and the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt between 1968 and 1971. He subsequently pursued painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was a master student of Günter Fruhtrunk. His career has been marked by various grants and awards, including a DAAD postgraduate scholarship in New York City and support from the City of Munich. His work is held in numerous prestigious collections, such as the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich, the Sammlung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Berlin, and the Daimler Kunstsammlung in Stuttgart.
