A Life in Portraiture and Pastoral Scenes

Edward Francis Wells was a painter who specialized in pastoral scenes and portraits. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools, he developed a style characterized by technical exactitude and a particular facility for capturing a good likeness in his portraiture. His work often demonstrated a desire for technical precision, a trait influenced by his father's focus on the true rendering of color and tone. Wells exhibited his work at the Royal Academy summer exhibition and in various commercial galleries in London, such as the Grafton Galleries and the Modern Gallery in Bond Street. His paintings often evoked a sense of traditional beauty.

His artistic output included:

Artistic Journey and Travels

Born in Chinsurah, India, Wells moved to England as a child. His education included time at the Slade School of Art and the St John's Wood Art School before he spent nearly four years at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1900, he traveled to Italy, visiting cities such as Florence, Siena, Rome, Naples, Capri, and Venice.

Throughout his career, Wells worked in various media, including oils, watercolours, and pastels. While he was often driven by the commercial necessity of portrait commissions, he held a strong preference for pastoral subjects. His later years involved extensive watercolour painting trips around England and Scotland. In 1945, he opened an art gallery in London dedicated to his own work, which remained open until 1949.
