Early Life, Family and Artistic Training
Edlef Romeny was born on 14 February 1926 in Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands. He grew up as the son of a minister, Barend ter Haar Romeny, and Elisabeth Karoline Lisette Heetel. His early years were shaped by this upbringing in the Netherlands, though his path would eventually lead him far from his birthplace. During the war, his studies were interrupted, and he later served as a marine in the Dutch East Indies, where he worked as a front-line artist during the police actions.
His formal training began at the Academy in Arnhem between 1943 and 1944. After his military service, he moved on to the Academy in Antwerp, where he studied from 1948 to 1951 as a Dutch state scholar. This period of study helped refine his technical approach before he continued his education at the Akademie Notre Dame des Champs. These years of instruction provided the foundation for a career that would eventually span several countries and various artistic mediums.
Artistic Movements and Diverse Techniques
His practice moved between the boundaries of abstract expressionism and figurative art. He worked with a heavy, colorist approach, applying oil on canvas to build up layers of pigment. This focus on color was matched by a technical curiosity in his graphic work. He developed a specific way of etching using the aquatint carburundum technique, which allowed for a particular texture in his prints.
Beyond the canvas and the printing plate, he was a stained glass artist. This required a different kind of precision, translating his visual language into light and glass. His output was varied, spanning painting, graphic arts, and glasswork. He often returned to certain motifs, such as birds and musical themes, throughout his career.
Life in Sweden and France
In 1955, Romeny moved to Sweden, where he married a Swedish woman. This period marked a significant chapter in his life, as he became a known figure in the Swedish art scene during the 1960s and 1970s. His presence in the country was steady, and he maintained a connection to his Dutch roots even as he established himself within the Nordic landscape.
By 1965, he had acquired an atelier in Provence. He spent his summers there, working amidst the specific light and scenery of the French countryside. This seasonal rhythm eventually led to a permanent change in his surroundings. In 1980, he moved to France full-time and married Lise Arsiguet, a well-known soprano. He eventually settled in the region, finding a sense of place in the landscape he had visited for years.
His life in France continued until his death on 25 December 2017 in Les Baups, near Villars. He spent his final years in the environment he had cultivated through decades of seasonal visits and eventual residency.
Museum Collections and Notable Works
The reach of Romeny's work extends across several major institutions, finding a place in collections from Europe to the United States. His self-portrait is held within the Kunsthaus Zurich. Other pieces from his career are kept in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Västerås Art Museum. His presence is also noted in museums located in Paris and New York.
His output includes various forms, from large-scale mural paintings to smaller, intimate works. In 1952, he contributed a mural to a parish hall in Amsterdam. His stained glass work also found a place in sacred spaces, such as the four small windows he created for the Jonsberg church in 1960 and the windows for a chapel in Motala in 1963. In his later years, his focus shifted toward more figurative subjects, often exploring themes of music and animals, particularly birds.
One specific oil on canvas, titled Terre-Lumiere, dates from about 1969. This work is part of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe collection in Enschede. His graphic work is also noted for its use of the aquatint etching technique with carburundum.
