      Early Life, Family and Training

Edmund Fabry was born on 20 February 1892 in Norderney, Germany. He grew up in a household shaped by design and structure, as his father, Franz Fabry, was an architect born in 1860. His mother, Adele Risse, completed the family unit during his early years. The family's movements were dictated by his father's professional life, eventually leading them to settle in Wiesbaden after 1902.

His early education likely took place at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Mainz. This training would have provided the technical foundation for a life split between the precision of drafting and the fluidity of painting. He was raised within a Catholic tradition, a detail of his upbringing that remained a constant throughout his life.

      Artistic Career and Movements

Fabry’s hand moved between many disciplines, working as a painter, draftsman, etcher, and graphic artist. His early still lifes and architectural sketches showed the first traces of Expressionism, a style that eventually took hold of his entire practice. He moved through the art circles of the time, becoming a founding member of the Darmstädter Sezession in 1919. That same year, he was also part of the "Jungen Rheinland" in Düsseldorf. These affiliations placed him at the center of a shifting aesthetic landscape.

His involvement in the movement went beyond the canvas. He contributed to Expressionist magazines, including Menschen and Die Sichel. In these pages, his graphic work found a voice alongside the era's most pressing ideas. As his career progressed, the experimental qualities of his early years gave way to a complete commitment to Expressionism. His later works abandoned the more traditional structures of his youth for this singular, focused approach.

      Architectural Work and Commissions

After spending his early years working as a painter and graphic artist, Fabry transitioned into the field of architecture. He established an architectural office in Wiesbaden, moving away from the purely two-dimensional work of his earlier years. This shift saw him applying his sense of space and form to physical structures and interior environments.

One of his early assignments involved the Hofbuchhandlung Staadt shop in Wiesbaden. This project required him to manage both the renovation and the expansion of the existing space, as well as the design of its new interior. For this specific commission, he worked alongside the sculptor Arnold Hensler to integrate sculptural elements into the architectural design.

His architectural contributions extended to international recognition through the 1936 Summer Olympics. His work was included in the architecture event held as part of the art competition during those games. This involvement placed his structural designs within a larger, organized competition of form and function.
