Life and Artistic Evolution
Ernst Fritsch was a German painter and drawing teacher born in Charlottenburg. His professional journey began with an apprenticeship in a Berlin design studio for wall fabrics and wallpapers, followed by training as a drawing teacher at the Royal Art School in Berlin. He furthered his studies at the teaching institute of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin. After participating in the First World War, he worked as a teacher from 1919 to 1921.
His stylistic trajectory saw him move from being a representative of Cubism toward the New Objectivity. He was also committed to Expressionism, increasingly aligning with the expressive realism characterized by Rainer Zimmermann. During the period of National Socialism, Fritsch was a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts. His earlier works were not in accordance with the Nazi art canon; consequently, eight of his paintings were confiscated and destroyed in 1937 as part of the "Degenerate Art" action.
Later Career and Legacy
Following the war, Fritsch was represented in exhibitions in Berlin. In 1946, he became a professor at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, where he eventually led the department of art pedagogy starting in 1953. His works are held in various collections, including the National Gallery Berlin and the Berlinische Galerie.
