This interest in the struggle of the individual was further reflected in his 1808 work, Ugolin in his prison. Such subjects allowed him to navigate the dramatic tensions characteristic of the era, moving between religious devotion and the isolation of the prisoner.
Beyond these somber historical narratives, he demonstrated a capacity for capturing the quietude of youth and the intensity of leadership. In 1813, he painted a portrait of the Musset children, Paul and Alfred, a work that remains a significant example of his portraiture. He also addressed more political and oratorical themes, such as in his 1819 painting of Gustave Wasa haranguing the Dalécarlians. Through these varied subjects, Dufau moved from the intimate details of a family's likeness to the grand, sweeping gestures of historical figures.
