A Life Dedicated to the Sea
Frederick James Aldridge was a British painter working in oils and watercolour. He was a prolific artist whose large output focused primarily on marine scenes. His typical subjects involved a small number of mid-size vessels situated at sea or within a harbour, depicted across a variety of different weathers. He began his painting career at the age of twenty and lived and worked in Worthing, where he maintained a gallery shop. Throughout his career, he signed his works F J Aldridge and occasionally included dates.
His connection to maritime life was deeply personal; he attended Cowes Week many times over a period of approximately fifty years. His artistic reach included exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the Suffolk Street Galleries. His work is held in various collections, including the Littlehampton Museum and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Artistic Legacy and Final Years
The later years of Aldridge's life were marked by a forced departure from his craft. Due to failing eyesight, he was compelled to stop painting in 1927. He passed away in 1933.
