His formal artistic training began at the Staatliche Akademie für Kunstgewerbe in Dresden under Margarete Junge and Paul Rößler, and continued at the Kunstakademie in Dresden studying under Max Feldbauer, Otto Hettner, and Otto Gußmann. Throughout his career, Tröger engaged in various professional roles, including serving as a costume advisor at the Hof- und Landestheater Meiningen and working as a teacher at the Kunstschule of Guido Richter and the Heeres-Handwerker-Schule in Dresden.
Tröger's travels were significant to his development, including study trips to Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Austria, and France. During his career, he experimented with ceramic mural painting at the Meißner Porzellanmanufaktur. He was a member of several artistic groups, including the Dresdner Sezession 1932, the Künstlergruppe Freie Künstlerschaft Sachsen, and the Künstlergruppe Das Ufer. His work has been featured in various exhibitions across cities such as Dresden, Berlin, Leipzig, and Halle.

The works of Fritz Tröger are held in several collections, including the Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister. His artistic output included various forms such as paintings, graphic works, and drawings. In the later years of his life, he held a work contract and led a circle for artistic folk creation.
