A Life Between Spain and Rome

Gabriel Durán began his life in Vic, Spain, born around 1747 or 1749. He was the son of a locksmith named Juan Durán, a man whose trade was far removed from the world of fine oils and canvas. Despite these humble beginnings, Gabriel moved to Barcelona to begin his training. He became an apprentice in the workshop of Manuel Tramulles Roig, where he first learned to handle the tools of a painter. This early education provided the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him far from his Catalan roots.

His talent was evident early on. By the age of thirteen, he had already traveled to Rome, where he earned a second-class prize for a drawing at the Academy of San Luca. His skill continued to grow in the Italian capital, and by 1765 and 1767, he had secured first-class prizes from the same institution. This period in Rome was a defining chapter of his life. He married an Italian woman and became an academic of merit at the Accademia di San Luca in 1781. However, the life of an artist in Rome was often a struggle against poverty, and he relied on the support of influential figures to sustain his work and his standing.

      Artistic Recognition and Struggles

Durán’s career was marked by both official honors and periods of significant hardship. He was a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, receiving his status as an academic of merit in January 1776. His path was not always smooth; in 1773, he nearly lost his position at the Academy due to concerns regarding his output, but he was saved by the support of the Spanish ambassador to the Holy See. His professional life was a balance of creating original works and studying the masters who came before him.

His technical development is evident in the variety of subjects he tackled and the methods he used to learn. His repertoire included:

      • Religious compositions such as Saint Sebastian attended by Saint Irene.
      • Mythological scenes like a landscape featuring Mercury and Argos.
      • Studies and copies of works by Titian, Caravaggio, and Velázquez.
      • Self-portraits that captured his own likeness.

      Legacy and Later Years

In his later years, Durán held administrative roles, such as being the accountant for the Palace of Spain in 1786. His work often intersected with the religious life of the era. He painted the glorification of Saint Michael the Archangel for a beatification in 1779, a large canvas that was eventually moved to the cathedral in Vic before it was destroyed in 1936. He also worked on a piece celebrating the beatification of Blessed Maria Ana de Jesus in 1783.

He died in Rome in 1806, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the Neoclassical style of his time. His paintings remain in various collections, including the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where his original compositions and his careful copies of the great masters continue to be preserved.
