Early Life, Family and Training
Henk Meijer was born in Groningen, Netherlands, on 22 December 1884. His early interest in the visual arts began in his home province, where he received his first drawing lessons from the landscape painter Bernardus Bueninck. These formative years in Groningen provided the foundation for a life dedicated to painting, illustration, and drawing.
As his talent developed, Meijer sought more formal instruction to refine his skills. He enrolled at the Academie Minerva in Groningen to continue his studies. Seeking to reach a higher level of technical proficiency, he eventually moved to Amsterdam to study at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. During his time at the Rijksakademie, he was a student of Antoon Derkinderen, a period that helped shape his approach to his craft.
Professional Career and Teaching
Henk Meijer’s professional life spanned several decades, beginning in earnest around 1904 and continuing until 1970. His hands were busy with many different forms of expression; he worked as a painter, a draftsperson, and an illustrator. He also found work as a lithographer and a designer of book covers. His creative presence was felt across various locations, including Groningen, Amsterdam, Haarlem, Den Haag, and Wassenaar. During his career, he was a member of the Kunstenaarsvereniging Sint Lucas, participating in the artistic community of the time.
Teaching became a central part of his life, as he possessed a deep understanding of the mechanics of drawing. In 1919, he was appointed as a lector for the evening model drawing class at the Rijksakademie. This role eventually led him to a long-term position in Den Haag. From 1921 until 1950, he served as the head teacher of drawing at the Academie van beeldende kunsten. He spent much of his working life guiding others through the technical nuances of their craft, sharing the knowledge he had gathered throughout his years as a working artist.
Awards and Recognition
Early in his career, Meijer’s talent was recognized through formal support from the state. In 1905, he was granted a royal subsidy for fine arts, a distinction intended to assist promising students in their development. This early validation helped sustain his path as he moved through the academic circles of the Netherlands.
His reputation grew through several competitive successes in the years that followed. In 1913, he was awarded the Willink van Collen Prize, a recognition given to young artists. A year later, he achieved a significant distinction in a competition held by the Vrouwe Vigelius-legaat. His entry, titled "Nieuw Testament," was noted for its skill in handling historical and biblical subjects, earning him the first prize in its category along with a substantial monetary award.
Meijer’s presence in the professional art community was further solidified through his participation in major exhibitions. In 1914, his work was included in an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, marking his place among the notable artists of his time.
Technique, Style and Notable Works
Meijer’s hand was as comfortable with a lithograph stone as it was with a pen or an oil brush. His approach to art was rooted in naturalism and realism, focusing on the honest depiction of his subjects. Whether he was working on a detailed pen drawing or a layered oil painting, there was a commitment to capturing the world as it appeared, without unnecessary embellishment. This steady, observant style allowed him to move between the delicate precision of illustration and the weight of formal portraiture.
He had a particular talent for capturing the character of the people who sat before him. In 1923, he painted a portrait of Bon Ingen-Housz, a work that remains a significant part of his legacy. His ability to translate human presence onto canvas made him a sought-after painter for those wishing to be remembered through his lens. His portfolio includes several notable portraits that capture the likenesses of his contemporaries:
- August Allebé
- Paul Citroen
- Hendrik Haverman
- Willem Schrofer
- Jan Musch
- Michel de Klerk
Beyond the faces of individuals, his work often touched upon the quiet stillness of still lifes. He moved through his career with a technical versatility that allowed him to serve as an illustrator and a designer of book covers, ensuring that his sense of realism extended from the large canvas to the intimate scale of a printed page.
Students and Legacy
The influence of Henk Meijer extended far beyond his own canvases, reaching into the studios of those he mentored throughout his long career. His role as a teacher was deeply personal, a connection that even crossed the boundaries of family. His son, Mans Meijer, was among those who studied under his guidance, carrying the family's artistic tradition forward. Beyond his own home, Meijer shaped the hands and eyes of many aspiring artists, including Cootje Horst, who learned from him during his years of instruction.
His classroom became a gathering place for a diverse group of talents who would go on to make their own marks. He guided Theo Bitter, Kees Bol, and Lodewijk Bruckman, while others like Bob Bruijn and Rein Draijer sought his expertise. The list of those who passed through his instruction continues with Stien Eelsingh, Willem Minderman, and Toos Neger. He also taught Henk Peeters, Toon Wegner, Co Westerik, and Cornelis Zitman, leaving a quiet but lasting imprint on the Dutch artistic landscape through the many practitioners he helped develop.
After a life spent teaching and creating, Meijer passed away in Wassenaar on 22 February 1970. He left behind a legacy defined not only by the portraits and drawings he produced but by the generations of artists who carried his lessons into the next era of Dutch art.
