The Painter of the West Indies

Copenhagen, 1899. A young man emerges from the Academy of Arts with a background in house painting and a debut at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. Hugo Larsen carries the technical discipline of his trade into the realm of fine art. His early years are marked by a breakthrough in 1901 with Prisoners Working on the Moors, a large-scale work capturing the intense physical labor of the Moor Movement in Jutland. The painting does more than depict toil; it summarizes a political era of reclamation and social reintegration.

A shift occurs in 1904. Through the influence of Professor Frants Henningsen, Larsen finds himself on a ship bound for the Danish West Indies. He arrives in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, after a long voyage that includes a detour through Cuba. For three years, he inhabits the islands of St. Croix and St. John. The light changes. His brush moves between realism and impressionism, capturing the heat of the midday sun and the movement of local life.

      A Window into the Islands

The work produced during this period functions as a visual record of a society in flux. Larsen does not seek out purely idyllic scenes. Instead, he documents people as they exist: dancing, arguing, or resting in the shade. His charcoal drawings and oil paintings provide faces to the population of the islands. In Nanny with Baby, painted in 1905, a child and her caregiver are silhouetted against the backdrop of Blackbeard’s Hill. The scene captures a specific social architecture, where a private balcony separates a comfortable home from the heat of the town below.

      His subjects include:

      • The working class engaged in the daily rhythms of St. Thomas.
      • Portraits of the local population rendered with empathetic detail.
      • Landscape views of harbors and hillsides that serve as historical time capsules.

      Return and Obscurity

In 1907, Larsen returns to Denmark with thirty-five paintings. The reception is quiet. The Danish public and administration have turned their attention away from the colonies, and his work fails to gain widespread traction. He finds himself at a crossroads where talent meets a lack of timing. To sustain himself, he turns to portraiture, painting the higher classes of Copenhagen to maintain a living.

While his landscapes and West Indian studies remain largely ignored by the establishment during his lifetime, his technical skill remains evident in his later output. He continues to paint, yet the momentum of his Caribbean years fades into the background of the Danish art scene. He remains a figure whose most significant visual contributions were made while far from the eyes of the Copenhagen critics.
