A life shaped by form and earth
Ib Geertsen began his working years far from the canvas, training as a gardener between 1934 and 1939. This early connection to the physical world and growth left its mark on his later approach to color and space. He was self-taught, moving through the art circles of Aalborg in 1937 where he looked toward the works of Paul Cézanne and Amedeo Modigliani. His early paintings leaned into Naturalism, focusing on dark still lifes and landscapes.
By 1943, a move to Copenhagen brought a shift in his hand. The work became more spontaneous, utilizing an impasto technique and surrealistic touches. He did not stay fixed in one way of seeing. In 1947, he helped found the Linien II artists association, a group that would eventually lead him toward the Konkrete movement. This period marked a departure from the organic shadows of his youth toward something more disciplined.
The language of circles and squares
As his career progressed, Geertsen developed a specific visual vocabulary. He moved away from expressionism and toward a hard-edged, geometric abstract language. His method was methodical; he often planned his compositions by cutting shapes out of paper, arranging them until the balance felt right, and then drawing around them to block in color without the use of masking tape. This process resulted in a style defined by rounded areas, solid coloring, and a recurring motif known as the "tear drop" or "circle-square."
His work expanded beyond the flat surface of a canvas. He applied his precise color schemes to public spaces, decorating schools and hospitals in Næstved, Aalborg, and Copenhagen. His interests grew to include:
- Mobile sculptures made of lacquered metal and iron
- Screenprints and furniture design
- Cast-concrete sculptures for children's play areas
- Public decorations for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Statens Museum for Kunst concert hall
A presence in Danish modernism
Geertsen’s work became part of the physical fabric of Denmark. His use of bright, contrasting colors and geometric forms coincided with the expansion of the Danish welfare state, where his art found a home in road underpasses, universities, and public buildings. He sought to bring a sense of visual uplift to passers-by through these large-scale commissions. His sculptures, such as those made of brass or painted iron, shared this same playful, abstract logic found in his paintings.
Throughout his decades of activity, he received recognition through the Eckersberg Medal in 1978 and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1991. His pieces are held in permanent collections such as the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, and the Trapholt Museum. Even as his work moved into the realm of mobile sculptures and public design, he maintained a focus on the fundamental relationship between form and color.
