      1902 - 1929

A life shaped by lines and geometry

Ilya Chashnik arrived in the world in 1902 in Lucyn, part of the Russian Empire, in a town now known as Ludza, Latvia. He was the youngest of eight children born to a Jewish family. His early years were spent in Vitebsk, where he began studying at Yehuda Pen's art school when he was eleven. The work of his teachers left marks on his hands and mind long before he found his own way. In 1918, he moved to Moscow to work in an art workshop directed by Kazimir Malevich, but the pull of Vitebsk brought him back after Malevich took a teaching position there.

His training was not confined to a single classroom or method. He studied under Marc Chagall and briefly worked under El Lissitzky. These encounters shaped how he saw space and form. By 1920, he was part of the UNOVIS group, a collective of artists dedicated to new ways of seeing. He even took on the role of editor for the UNOVIS journal, managing the printed word alongside the painted shape.

The movement from white to black

Chashnik's approach to painting changed as he grew. While his mentor Malevich often worked with white compositions, Chashnik moved toward pieces where black became the primary element. He used geometric shapes—squares, triangles, and rectangles—to create crossing planes that suggested rhythm and symmetry. His palette was often restricted to a few sharp contrasts: white, black, red, and blue.

He did not limit himself to the canvas. He looked for ways to bring these abstract principles into the physical objects of daily life. This led him to work with various materials and mediums:

      • Ceramics and porcelain at the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory.
      • Textile design and posters.
      • Metalwork and relief constructions.
      • Architectural projects, including designs for residential quarters in Leningrad.

In his later years, he experimented with complex tonal relations. His work moved from the starkness of early Suprematism toward more varied color use, though it often retained a decorative quality. He saw these geometric forms not as static shapes, but as parts of a larger, functional system.

      A brief, finished chapter

The years Chashnik spent creating were few. He moved to Petrograd in 1922 and continued his work with the Institute of Artistic Culture and the Institute of Decorative Arts. His collaboration with Nikolai Suetin was a constant throughout this period, as they worked together on both porcelain and architectural models.

His life ended in Leningrad in 1929 at the age of 27, following complications from an appendix operation. Though his career lasted less than a decade, the objects he left behind—from small sketches for china to large-scale reliefs—remain in collections such as the State Hermitage Museum and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. He left behind a record of what happens when abstract thought meets the practical needs of a changing society.
