The Making of a Visual Storyteller

Jacob Zekveld was a man of many mediums, moving between the tactile world of sculpture and the flat planes of painting and graphic art. Born in 1945, he spent his formative years studying at the Free Academy in The Hague, a place that helped shape his unique way of seeing the world. His work often felt like a bridge between reality and the imagination, focusing on the quiet drama of people, the presence of animals, and the strange logic of fairytale scenes. He had a way of looking at the world that felt both modern and deeply rooted in a sense of wonder.

His approach to art was closely tied to the nouvelle figuration style. This wasn't about perfect realism, but rather a way of capturing the essence of a subject through a more stylized, expressive lens. He was also associated with the pop art movement, particularly in how he engaged with the imagery of the 1960s. His work often featured hard colors and flat planes, yet the characters he created—sometimes cartoonlike and affable—carried a weight of human emotion that felt very real.

      A Season of Recognition

The mid-1960s were a period of intense activity for Zekveld. He made a notable debut in 1965, and by 1966, he was a frequent presence in the galleries of Rotterdam, exhibiting alongside other artists of his generation. His ability to translate complex themes into accessible, striking imagery led to significant recognition. He was awarded a scholarship and the Royal Subsidy for Painting in 1968 and 1969, honors that spoke to the technical skill and vision he brought to his canvases.

His reach extended far beyond the borders of the Netherlands. He was part of the international art conversation, exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in 1968 and at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris. His work also found its way to Rio de Janeiro, proving that his visual language could communicate across different cultures and landscapes. Whether he was working on a series like Sleeping Beauty or exploring themes in What a day for a daydream, his presence in the art world was felt deeply during these years.

      Themes and Legacy

Zekveld’s subjects often felt like they belonged to a dreamscape. He explored various series that touched on the surreal and the familiar, such as This is Holland and Royal visit (Charlie Chaplin). His paintings, like Dans mes yeux and Jacob in Spiegelland, show a preoccupation with how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Even his more intense works, such as The undertakers and the angry one, demonstrate a range that moved from the cheerful to the profound.

Though he passed away in 2002, the impact of his diverse practice remains. He was a designer, an installation artist, and a painter who refused to be confined to a single way of expressing himself. His work remains a part of significant collections, including the Groninger Museum, where pieces like Black head of state continue to represent the spirit of a specific, transformative era in Dutch art history.
