A Life Shaped by Exile and Ambition

Born into a Huguenot family in Paris, Jacques Rousseau lived a life defined by the shifting tides of religious and political fortune. In his youth, he sought the light of Rome, wandering through the ancient ruins of the Italian landscape to capture their crumbling grandeur on canvas. It was during these years that his hand began to master the art of the decorative landscape, finding inspiration in the works of Nicolas Poussin and Gaspard Dughet. He also drew strength from the influence of Herman van Swanevelt, a painter whose sister he eventually took as his wife.

The stability of his early career was interrupted by the heavy hand of history. When the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 forced many Protestants to flee, Rousseau found himself a man without a country, seeking refuge first in Switzerland and then in Holland. This period of displacement saw his name struck from the rolls of the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture, yet his talent remained a commodity that kings and dukes could not ignore. Even as he moved through Europe, the demand for his decorative skill followed him.

      The Grandeur of Royal Commissions

Upon returning to Paris, Rousseau found himself at the heart of French courtly life. He was a painter of walls, tasked with transforming the interiors of the most prestigious residences in the kingdom. His brush adorned the Hôtel Lambert and the great palaces of the French Crown, including the Château de Saint-Cloud, the Palace of Versailles, and the Château de Marly. These works were often large-scale, designed to integrate seamlessly with the architecture of the rooms they inhabited.

His talent for trompe-l'œil and classical ruins allowed him to create illusions of depth and antiquity within the very fabric of these royal dwellings. He worked extensively in the Orangery of Versailles and contributed to the decoration of the Tuileries Palace. Even after his move to England, invited by the Duke of Montague, he continued this tradition of architectural painting. At Montague House, which now sits upon the site of the British Museum, he labored alongside other French masters to decorate the palace walls, leaving behind a legacy that remains in collections such as Hampton Court Palace.

      Technique and the Painter's Hand

To look closely at a Rousseau landscape is to encounter a style that was intentionally artificial and conventionally decorative. He did not seek the delicate touch of Canaletto; instead, his work possessed a certain vigor. His use of color was often bold and perhaps even harsh to some eyes, characterized by a violent treatment of skies using crude blues and oranges. This was paired with an exaggerated chiaroscuro that gave his compositions a dramatic, if sometimes heavy, presence.

Beyond the medium of oil and fresco, Rousseau proved himself a capable etcher. His prints, often based on the works of Annibale Caracci or his own designs, were noted for being vigorous, even if they lacked a certain refinement in execution. He was a man of many disciplines—a draftsman, an etcher, and a decorator—whose life ended in London in 1693, having lived through the heights of French royal splendor and the hardships of religious exile.
