A Life Between Two Cities
Born in Montreal in 1868, Joseph Saint-Charles lived much of his life navigating the space between his Canadian roots and the studios of France. He was the son of Bénoni Saint-Charles, a carter, and Césarie Poupart. His early training began locally under Abbé Joseph Chabert and F. Ed Meloche, but the pull of Europe eventually led him to Paris. In 1885, he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts, seeking to refine his hand alongside some of the most significant instructors of the era.
His time in France was marked by deep study and academic rigor. He learned from Benjamin Constant, Jules Lefebvre, and Jean-Paul Laurens, later spending time at Rome's Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1896. These years abroad shaped his technical foundation, allowing him to bring a sophisticated European sensibility back to Quebec. Despite the distance, he remained connected to his home, often moving between Paris and Montreal throughout his career.
The Art of the Portrait and the Classroom
For much of his professional life, Saint-Charles was recognized as a skilled portraitist. His studio became a place where the prominent figures of Quebec society—politicians and businessmen alike—could sit for their likenesses. This period of his work was characterized by a focus on the human form and character. He also contributed to the spiritual landscape of Montreal, executing large canvases for the Sacré Coeur chapel of Notre-Dame and painting religious scenes like La Présentation de la Vierge au Temple.
Beyond his own easel, he dedicated himself to passing on his knowledge to the next generation. He held several teaching positions that shaped the artistic landscape of Montreal:
- Teacher of design at the Conseil des arts et manufactures de la province de Québec.
- Professor at the Université de Montréal from 1910 to 1925.
- Instructor at the École des beaux-arts de Montreal.
Later Years and Changing Perspectives
As he reached the later decades of his life, a shift occurred in his creative focus. The intense study of portraiture that had defined his middle years began to give way to a different subject. Toward the end of the 1940s, Saint-Charles turned his attention almost exclusively to landscapes. This transition marked a departure from the structured faces of society toward the natural world.
He remained an active participant in the art community through various competitions and exhibitions until the late 1940s. His legacy is preserved in several important collections, including the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. He passed away in Montreal in 1956, leaving behind a body of work that spans from academic studies to the quiet observation of nature.
