The Life and Travels of Joseph Selleny

Born in Untermeidling, Austria, Joseph Selleny was a painter, illustrator, and lithographer who studied at the Vienna Academy under Thomas Ender and Franz Steinfeld. His artistic journey included study trips through Tyrol, Lombardy, and Venice, followed by a scholarship-funded journey to Rome and Naples. Selleny’s career was significantly shaped by his connection to Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, who supported his work. This relationship led to his participation in the Novara Expedition, a scientific world voyage from 1857 to 1859. During this expedition, Selleny acted as a visual documentarian, producing approximately 2,000 watercolors, sketches, and studies of the various countries visited by the frigate Novara. His vivid depictions served as the basis for numerous lithographs and illustrations in highly successful publications, including works by Karl von Scherzer.

Artistic Legacy and Later Years

Beyond his maritime documentation, Selleny accompanied Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian on travels through North Africa, the Cape Verde Islands, the Canary Islands, and Brazil. Upon returning to Vienna, he established himself as a freelance artist and a garden architect, notably designing the layouts for the Vienna City Park and the gardens of Miramare Castle. His technical mastery was frequently applied to landscapes, which he captured through direct watercolor sketches or studio works based on field studies. In his later years, Selleny moved to South Tyrol, where he painted imposing rock landscapes in oil. He eventually returned to Vienna, where he passed away in 1875. His remains are interred in the Central Cemetery of Vienna, and his name is commemorated in the Sellenygasse.
