      A Life Shaped by Ghent

Jules De Bruycker was born in Ghent, Belgium, into a family that ran a small business specializing in upholstery and wallpapering. His early years were marked by a sudden shift in responsibility; after his father passed away when Jules was only fourteen, he stepped away from his formal studies to help manage the family trade. This period of working with fabrics and patterns stayed with him, even as he eventually returned to the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent to refine his skills under teachers like Théodore-𝘑𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘩 Canneel and Louis Tytgadt.

In his early adulthood, he sought out the bohemian atmosphere of the Patershol district. This area was a gathering place for many artists, and living among this community helped shape his perspective on the people around him. While he continued to work in the family business, his true focus remained on the streets of his home city. He had a particular way of looking at the less privileged quarters of Ghent, capturing the lives of those living on the fringes of society with a sharp, sometimes merciless eye.

      The Art of the Etching

Though he worked with many mediums, including watercolor, gouache, and oil on canvas, De Bruycker found his most profound expression through printmaking. A turning point occurred in 1905 when he discovered the etchings of Albert Baertsoen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent. This discovery led him to develop a technical virtuosity that would define his career. He became an expert in etching and drypoint, using these tools to create works that contrasted massive, ancient architecture with the small, everyday movements of human beings.

His prints often focused on specific architectural subjects, such as:

      • The streets and markets of Ghent
      • Cathedrals in France and Belgium, including studies of Paris, Rouen, and Amiens
      • The heavy, historic structures of Antwerp and Bourges

In these works, buildings often seem to possess a life of their own. He could depict a towering cathedral with such weight that it seemed to press down upon the figures below, yet he also found moments of lightness, such as in his depiction of children running near the Saint Severin Church in Paris.

      Witness to Change and War

The outbreak of World War I forced De Bruycker to leave Belgium for England. This period of exile changed the tone of his work. Because he could not sketch outdoors due to the fear of spies, he turned inward, creating large etchings that documented the destruction in Flanders. These images were somber and reflected the human suffering of the conflict, often using ghostly figures to convey the horror of the war.

After returning to Belgium in 1919, his reputation grew within Europe. He received several honors, including being named a Knight in the Order of Leopold in 1921 and becoming a full member of the Royal Academy of Belgium in 1925. His ability to observe group behavior—whether at a weekly market, in a theater, or during a folk festival—made him a significant figure in Belgian graphic art. He remained an observer of his era until his death in 1945, leaving behind a body of work that documented both the architectural grandeur and the social realities of his time.
