      1896 - 1925

      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Vienna on August 30, 1896, Julius Zimpel entered a world deeply connected to the visual arts. He was the nephew of Gustav Klimt, a familial connection that provided an early, quiet immersion into the creative atmosphere of the era. Growing up in this environment, Zimpel began to find his own direction, moving toward the formal study of design and composition.

His formal education commenced in 1911 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. During these formative years, he studied under a distinguished group of instructors, including Rudolf Cižek, Anton von Kenner, Adolf Böhm, Alfred Roller, Oskar Strnad, and Rudolf von Larisch. This rigorous training provided the technical foundation for his later work as a graphic artist and applied designer. By 1914, his focus shifted toward more specific disciplines when he entered the painting class of Kolo Moser. He remained under Moser's instruction until 1916, refining the skills that would define his professional output.

      Professional Career and Teaching

The professional trajectory of Julius Zimpel was marked by an early transition from student to instructor. In October 1916, he was appointed as a teacher at the Fachliche Fortbildungsschule für Buchbinder. His pedagogical influence expanded the following year when he began teaching Fachzeichnen und Modellieren at the Fortbildungsschule für Juweliere. These roles established him as a significant figure in the technical instruction of Viennese craftspeople during a period of profound social change.

His creative output became increasingly intertwined with the Wiener Werkstätte during the post-war years. He contributed designs across a vast spectrum of materials and decorative arts. His vision extended to the creation of bookbindings, fabrics, glass decor, ceramics, metal objects, ivory, and toys. This versatility allowed him to influence the aesthetic landscape of daily objects through varied mediums.

Following the death of Dagobert Peche, Zimpel was entrusted with the artistic direction of the Wiener Werkstätte. This appointment placed him at the helm of one of the most influential design collectives of the era. He held this leadership position until his death, leaving behind a body of work that bridged the gap between fine art and functional design.

      Artistic Works and Publications

Zimpel’s creative output was defined by a profound engagement with the book as a physical and visual object. He was a prolific practitioner of graphic arts, producing approximately 100 original graphic books that merged text with his own hand-drawn or lithographic illustrations. Beyond these personal volumes, his influence extended to the broader publishing landscape through twenty-five printed books, where he contributed essential book decorations or designed cover drawings. His work in this medium demonstrated a versatile command over various techniques, including pen and ink drawing, stone drawing, woodcut, and etching.

His illustrative work often brought literary narratives to life through a distinct graphic sensibility. In 1922, he provided the illustrations for Christoph Martin Wieland’s Don Sylvio von Rosalva and Geschichte des Prinzen Biribinker. That same year, he turned his attention to the works of E. T. A. Hoffmann, providing the imagery for Das Majorat. His collaborative efforts with publishers continued into 1923, when he illustrated Max Glass’s Don Juans Puppen. Through these various publications, Zimpel helped shape the visual identity of early twentieth-century book design.
