Early Life and Artistic Training
Juraj Kollár was born on 20 March 1981 in Nitra, Slovakia. His path toward a life of painting began early at the Elementary Art School in his hometown. It was there that his teacher, Alexandre Kiss, helped awaken a primary interest in art, instilling in him a sense of discipline and perseverance that would support his later development. This early foundation led him to the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Secondary School, where he followed a curriculum with an artistic orientation.
As he moved into higher education, Juraj Kollár sought out formal training at two of the most significant institutions in Central Europe. From 1999 to 2003, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. This period allowed him to refine his technical skills and begin finding his footing as a painter. He continued his academic pursuits in the Czech Republic, attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 2003 to 2005.
Technique and Artistic Style
Juraj Kollár works within the traditional discipline of painting, often returning to the foundational genres of landscape, portrait, nude, and still life. His approach to oil painting is physical and layered. He employs an impulsive, gestic method, applying paint in a rough, pasty style that relies on numerous layers of underpainting to build depth. This heavy application of material is balanced by a subtle color scheme and visible brush strokes that reveal the movement of his hand. His compositions often exist in a quiet tension, finding a middle ground between reality and abstraction.
A defining element of his visual language is the use of a grid system to organize the canvas. He divides the painting's surface into a complicated structure of elements, a method he has used for over a decade to create composed images. This technique is particularly evident in his series of works depicting views through glass bricks, where the actual image becomes abstract, leaving only the color and light to suggest the underlying subject. In these pieces, the true nature of the scene—be it a landscape or a reflection—is often only revealed through the title or by stepping back to see how the various surfaces coalesce.
Awards and Recognition
The early years of Juraj Kollár's career were marked by a series of significant honors that helped establish his presence in the European art scene. In 2007, he earned the first prize for the Prize of the Critics in Bratislava, Slovakia. This momentum continued into 2009, when he was awarded the third prize at the Celeste Prize in Berlin, Germany. That same year, he also received the Igor Kalný Award at the Salon of Young Artists in Zlin, Czech Republic.
His recognition grew as he moved through the professional landscape of the next decade. In 2010, he was awarded first prize at the VUB Painting competition in Bratislava, Slovakia. That same year, his work was recognized further when he received a nomination for the Prize of the Critics at Palace Adria in Prague, Czech Republic.
