A Life Between Cattaro and Ragusa

Lovro Marinov Dobričević, known in some circles as Lorenzo Bon, lived a life defined by the shifting borders of Venetian Dalmatia. Born in Cattaro, a city that would later become part of Montenegro, he was the eldest son of a bourgeois family. His early years were shaped by service; at age twelve, his father placed him in the care of the governor, Nicolò Pisano. This position eventually led him to Venice in 1435, where he traveled as a servant to the Cattaran governor. It was within the Venetian atmosphere that his artistic path began to take shape.

The transition from domestic service to the studio was a quiet evolution. While historical records suggest he may have studied under Antonio Vivarini and Michele Giambono, his development remained rooted in the practical needs of the region. He eventually returned to Cattaro, a city then bustling with monumental churches and palaces. By 1450, his standing in the community was such that the Cattaran chapter granted him a burial place near the bishop’s palace in the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon.

The Ragusan School and Sacred Commissions

In 1459, Dobričević moved his family to Ragusa, marking a new chapter in his professional output. He became a central figure within the Ragusan School of Painting, a group of artists including Biagio di Giorgio da Traù and Giovanni Ungaro. Their work was characterized by a specific religious necessity: the creation of icons and iconostases for the Serbian Orthodox Church across Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina, alongside polyptychs following the Roman Catholic tradition in Ragusa.

His hands worked on various sacred surfaces throughout the mid-15th century. His early efforts can be found in the Serbian Orthodox Savina Monastery in Zeta. In Ragusa, his presence is felt in the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries, where his paintings remain part of the monastic landscape. Even in more remote locations like Slano, one of his altarpieces continues to reside within a local church.

      A Legacy of Diligence

The Venetian authorities recognized more than just his skill as a painter; they noted his character. In 1454, they officially exempted him from the duty of guarding the Cattaran walls, citing his loyalty and praiseworthy service. This distinction speaks to a man who was deeply integrated into the civic fabric of the cities where he lived.

Dobričević’s career concluded in Ragusa, where he died in 1478. He left behind a body of work that bridged different liturgical traditions, serving both the Orthodox and Catholic faithful. His workshop was a significant fixture of the era, contributing to a specific regional style that defined the religious visual language of the Adriatic coast during the 15th century.
