      Early Life and Family Background

Madge Gill was born in 1882 in Walthamstow, London. She entered the world as an illegitimate child, born out of wedlock. This beginning led to a childhood marked by separation; at the age of nine, she was placed in an orphanage. The early years of her life were shaped by this displacement and the quiet, structured existence of the institution.

By 1903, she had returned to London. During this time, she worked as a nurse, a role that required steady hands and a presence in the lives of others. Her connection to her family remained through her aunt, Kate Gill, who lived in London's East End. In 1907, Madge Gill married her cousin, Tom Gill. They lived together on limited means in the crowded streets of the East End.

Life in the city was marked by the realities of a working-class household. Madge Gill and Tom had three sons. The family's circumstances were often difficult, and the weight of their daily existence was felt through the loss of children and the physical toll of illness. These early years in London provided the backdrop for the life she would lead before her hands ever touched a pen for art.

      Spiritualism and Artistic Beginnings

Life in London's East End was lived alongside her aunt, Kate Gill, who introduced her to the practices of spiritism. This period was marked by significant physical change; an illness resulted in the loss of use of her left eye, and her right eye was eventually replaced with a glass eye. These personal hardships preceded a shift in her creative life. In 1919, she began to draw, a practice that would define her existence for the next four decades.

Her work was not a solitary endeavor of the will. She claimed to be guided by a spirit named Myrninerest, a name she understood to mean "My Inner Rest" or "My innerest." This connection dictated the rhythm of her nights. She worked rapidly by candlelight, entering a trance state to produce her drawings. The process was swift and nocturnal, a private communion that transformed her quiet rooms into spaces of intense, guided production.

      Technique and Artistic Style

She worked in a trance, often at night by the light of a single candle. For nearly forty years, her hands moved under the guidance of a spirit she called Myrninerest. Using ink, she filled large rolls of paper and small, postcard-like boxes with dense, frantic detail. Her lines and geometric figures often surround central figures, creating a sense of structured chaos. The work flirts with abstraction, pulling at the edges of form without ever fully letting go of recognizable shapes.

The faces that emerge from the ink are often women with delicate features. They wear elaborate hairstyles and hats typical of the turn of the century. These figures, which many believe to be self-portraits, possess doe eyes and pointed chins. The patterns surrounding them are heavy with shading and intricate linework. Beyond paper, she used needle and thread to create hand-embroidered clothing and rugs made of silk and wool.

      Key Works and Collections

The ink on her paper often settled into patterns of women with delicate features, framed by elaborate hairstyles and hats. These figures, sometimes appearing as self-portraits, were surrounded by dense lines, shading, and geometric shapes that suggested complex architecture. In her drawings from about 1940, such as Three female figures, these details emerge through rapid, nocturnal work. Later pieces, including Untitled, 1950s from 1950 and Many Mansions from 1951, show the continued use of pen and black ink to build these intricate, otherworldly spaces.

Much of her output remained hidden in cupboards and under beds until after her death. Today, these works are held in several significant places. The Centre Pompidou in Paris contains 921 works from the Donation d'Art Brut de Bruno Decharme. Her drawings and embroideries also reside in the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, France, and the Charlotte Zander collection in Germany.

      Later Years and Legacy

Throughout her life, Madge Gill maintained a strict boundary between her creative output and the marketplace. Even as demand for her drawings grew, she refused to sell her work. She believed the drawings did not belong to her, but were instead the property of the spirit that guided her hand. This conviction meant that much of her production remained tucked away in cupboards and under her bed, only to be discovered by others after she passed away.

She died in 1961, a few days after her 79th birthday, following a serious illness. The discovery of her vast, hidden archives helped establish her place among the classic Art Brut artists. Her drawings and embroideries eventually found their way into major collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne. These works offer a look into the private, nocturnal world she inhabited for decades.

In Walthamstow, the place where she lived and worked, her presence is marked by a Blue Plaque. This recognition honors the life of a woman whose prolific, trance-induced output left a permanent mark on the history of outsider art.
