      1924 - 1992

      Early Life, Family and Training

Martin Engelman enters the world in 1924 in Hoenkoop, Netherlands. Artistry runs deep within his lineage; his older brother Hans and his son Piet both pursue careers as painters. This familial inclination to the visual arts provides a backdrop to his early development in the Netherlands.

The years 1940–1941 mark a period of intense formal instruction during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Engelman studies at the Amsterdamse Grafische School. This training occurs under the guidance of the lithographer and photographer Bernard F. Eilers. His education continues at the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts in Maastricht, focusing on graphic techniques. These formative years establish the technical foundation for his later work as a painter and graphic artist.

His training eventually extends beyond Dutch borders. Engelman travels to Switzerland to attend the art academy of Sankt Gallen. Here, he focuses his studies on typography and composition. This specialized education in Switzerland refines the precision required for his future career as a typographer and graphic designer.

      War Years and Early Career

The German occupation of the Netherlands forces a sudden shift in Engelman's trajectory. In 1942, the threat of being sent to a German forced labor camp triggers a flight to the south of the country. He finds refuge with an uncle, settling into the rhythm of life as a typesetter in Maastricht. The precision of the printing trade provides a steady, if quiet, existence amidst the chaos of the war.

The scene shifts in 1944. Engelman travels to London, moving from the mechanical labor of typesetting toward the visual demands of wartime communication. He secures a position as a graphic designer for the Dutch navy. His task is the creation of war propaganda, utilizing his training in graphics to serve the military effort from across the North Sea. This period marks a transition from the technicalities of typography to the strategic application of graphic design.

      The Paris and Italy Years

Paris becomes the center of Engelman's world in 1947. He settles into the city, finding work within the professional circles of graphic design. Between 1948 and 1952, he serves as an assistant to A.M. Cassandre. This period of intense professional discipline coincides with a significant personal shift; in 1951, he and Bernadette de Galzain found a family together.

The focus shifts in 1954 when he moves to Italy. In Milan, his professional scope expands beyond the page. He operates as a freelance designer, taking on roles as a stage setter and exhibition architect. His architectural contributions reach a peak when he receives a gold medal for his design of the Dutch pavillon at the “Triennale” in Milan.

Development of Painting and International Travel

The focus shifts after 1957. The graphic design work and set design of the previous years recede as Engelman turns predominantly toward painting. This transition finds its first public stage in 1960 at the Gallery Giraudoux in Paris, where he holds his first solo exhibition of paintings. The momentum continues into the mid-1960s. In 1964, he travels to Kassel to participate in Documenta III, contributing three oil paintings to the exhibition.

The scene moves to the United States. In New York, his circle expands through an acquaintance with Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko. He spends several months painting in the city before the path leads elsewhere. Following his time in New York, he embarks on a long trip to Mexico.

      Teaching and Later Career

The late 1960s mark a shift toward academic influence. In 1967, Engelman moves into a guest professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. This period of teaching precedes a significant recognition in 1969, when he obtains the D.A.A.D. in Berlin. The momentum continues as he settles into a more permanent role within the German academic system.

By 1970, he is appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Berlin. He remains a fixture at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg for nearly two decades, teaching there until 1989. While his professional life is anchored in these Berlin institutions, his creative practice maintains a connection to the South of France, where he spends regular working periods in his studio in Rustrel, Provence, between 1974 and 1991.

      Artistic Style and Technique

Engelman’s creative output shifts through a significant evolution. His early explorations lean toward surrealism, but this phase eventually gives way to a commitment to abstract expressionism. By 1964, he moves away from collaborative or commercial constraints to work exclusively as an autonomous artist. This transition marks a departure from his earlier roles as a typographer and graphic designer toward a more singular focus on painting and drawing.

His technical versatility defines his practice. He operates as a painter, draftsman, and graphic artist, moving fluidly between the precision of lithography and the spontaneity of abstract forms. This duality is evident in his graphic work, which earned him a place in the Documenta III in Kassel. His ability to navigate both the structured world of typography and the fluid nature of expressive painting allows for a wide range of visual languages.

Legacy and Where to See Works

The physical presence of Martin Engelman's output persists across a wide spectrum of institutional and private holdings. His works reside in numerous museum, corporate, and private collections, marking a footprint that extends from the Netherlands into France. The Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam both hold his pieces within their permanent collections. In France, his work is also held by the Unterlinden Museum.

His influence remains anchored in these diverse repositories, reflecting a career that moved through the major centers of European graphic and abstract art. After a life spent navigating the creative hubs of Paris, Milan, and Berlin, his final years concluded in Munich, where he died in 1992.
