      Early Life, Family and Training

Max Fabian was born in Berlin, Germany, on March 3, 1873. His path toward becoming a painter and graphic designer began after he decided to leave behind an apprenticeship in commerce. This change in direction came through the encouragement of the history painter Anton von Werner, who saw potential in the young man's interests.

From 1891 to 1900, Fabian dedicated himself to his studies at the Berlin Academy. During these years, he learned under the guidance of Franz Skarbina, Paul Meyerheim, and Joseph Scheurenberg. These formative years provided the technical foundation for his later work, allowing him to develop the skills necessary for a professional career in the arts.

Following his time at the Academy, Fabian continued to refine his craft as a master student. Between 1900 and about 1905, he worked closely with Arthur von Kampf. This period of advanced study helped solidify his technical abilities before he moved into the professional sphere of exhibiting and teaching.

      Artistic Career and Teaching

By 1898, Fabian had established himself as a regular presence in the German art scene, exhibiting his work at the Great Art Exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Dresden, and Düsseldorf. His professional life took a more instructional turn in 1903, when he began leading his own painting school in Berlin. This period of teaching and steady exhibition was interrupted by the onset of war. In 1914, he went to Poland and Russia as a volunteer war painter. His time in the East brought him into contact with the lives of the Jewish community, an experience that resulted in the drawing Judenviertel, Lodz.

The realities of conflict soon moved from the canvas to the front lines. After serving as a soldier on the French front in 1915, Fabian spent much of his time documenting his war experiences through numerous drawings. He eventually returned to Berlin in 1918, wounded from his service. Following his recovery, he returned to the classroom, teaching at the drawing and painting school of the Association of Berlin Artists from 1919 until 1922.

      Style and Artistic Affiliations

Stylistically, Fabian’s work aligns with the principles of German Impressionism. His approach to painting and graphic design favored the light and atmosphere characteristic of that movement, yet he maintained a certain independence from the shifting tides of the era. While many of his contemporaries moved toward more radical, modern movements and joined various avant-garde associations, Fabian chose to keep a respectful distance from these groups. He preferred to remain within more established, traditional circles of the German art community.

His professional life was deeply rooted in the formal structures of the Berlin art scene. He was an active member of the Verband Berliner Künstler starting in 1903, and he later joined the Märkischer Künstlerbund in 1904. These affiliations reflected his position within the more conservative artistic organizations of the time. Between 1912 and 1920, he was also a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund, further cementing his place among the recognized practitioners of his generation.

      Later Years and Death

Max Fabian’s life came to an end in Berlin on March 26, 1926. His passing left behind a body of work that would eventually face a period of profound instability. While he had spent his later years teaching and engaging with various artistic circles, the physical remains of his creative output were subject to the shifting tides of European history.

The years following his death brought significant hardship to his family. In 1939, his widow was forced to leave Germany due to her Jewish heritage. She attempted to preserve his legacy by bringing his artistic estate with her to London. However, the preservation of his work was cut short by the violence of war. During 1940 and 1941, German bombs struck London, and much of the collection was destroyed in the attacks. Because of this loss, only a few works by Max Fabian have been preserved for the future.

      Legacy and Exhibitions

The preservation of Max Fabian's work remains a delicate matter. Because much of his artistic estate was lost during the bombing of London in 1940 and 1941, only a small number of his pieces have survived to be seen by the public. This scarcity makes the few remaining works particularly significant for those studying his life and the era in which he lived.

In 2000, the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin organized an exhibition at the Ephraim-Palais to honor his memory. This particular event was unique because it brought together the work of Max Fabian and his son, Erwin Fabian. While Max was a painter and graphic designer, Erwin found his calling as a sculptor and currently lives in Australia. This exhibition offered a rare opportunity to see the creative connection between father and son through their distinct artistic mediums.
