The Life and Work of Micah Williams

Micah Williams was a folk art painter who left a quiet, lasting mark on the American landscape. Born in 1782, his exact beginnings remain a matter of local history, as he was most likely born near Hempstead, New York, or in Essex County, New Jersey. Before he ever picked up a brush to capture a likeness, he worked as a silver plater. This early trade likely required a steady hand and a keen eye for detail, skills that would later define his approach to his true calling.

He became known primarily for his portrait painting, a craft that allowed him to move through various communities. His work was not about grand gestures, but about the faces and people of his time. With nearly 300 works attributed to him, his output was prolific, reflecting a man who was deeply embedded in the daily lives of his neighbors. He moved through the regions of New Jersey and New York, finding work by capturing the likenesses of those who sat before him.

Activity in New Jersey and New York

Micah Williams’ career was deeply rooted in the landscapes of the Mid-Atlantic. His artistic presence in the region began very early, with the earliest work attributed to him dating back to around 1790. As he established himself, his life became closely tied to New Jersey. In 1806, he married in New Brunswick, a city that would remain a significant part of his personal and professional life for many years.

His work as a portrait artist took him through various communities, specifically in and around New Brunswick and Monmouth County, New Jersey. He moved between these areas, seeking clients who wanted their likenesses captured. This period of his life was marked by a steady presence in the local social fabric, as he transitioned from his earlier life as a silver plater into a dedicated painter of people.

Later in his career, Williams spent a few years working in New York City, specifically from 1829 to 1833. This period in the city marked the final chapter of his active professional life, as the last work attributed to him was completed in 1833. His movements between the bustling streets of New York and the established towns of New Jersey defined the scope of his professional reach.

      Notable Portrait Works and Mediums

Williams was a prolific creator, leaving behind nearly 300 extant works that collectors and historians continue to study. His hands were skilled in various textures, moving between the soft, dusty application of pastel on paper and the more substantial presence of oil on canvas. This versatility allowed him to capture the likenesses of many people throughout the early nineteenth century, often working as a traveling artist who sought out clients in the local communities of New Jersey and New York.

His use of pastel allowed for a certain delicacy in his portraiture. For instance, a Portrait of a gentleman, created after 1822, demonstrates his ability to work with this medium to define a subject's character. He also produced several works that focused on the details of dress and adornment. Between 1820 and 1830, he painted Woman Wearing a White Shawl and Woman Wearing Jet Beads, works that highlight his attention to the specific textures of the clothing worn by his subjects.

When working in oil, his compositions took on a different weight. One such example is A Pair of Portraits, which was executed on canvas. These portraits often served as the primary way for families to preserve the image of a loved one, a task Williams performed frequently during his years as a portrait painter.

      Later Years and Death

The final chapter of Micah Williams' life took place in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After years of traveling through the surrounding counties to find subjects for his portraits, he spent his remaining time in this community. He passed away there on November 21, 1837, at the age of 54–55.

His burial initially took place in New Brunswick, where he was laid to rest following his death. In later years, his remains were moved to a different resting place. He was eventually reinterred in Van Liew Cemetery, located in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
