Early Life, Family and Training
Nuremberg, January 29, 1889. Otto Wirsching enters a world defined by the precision of a pharmacist family. This lineage of science and chemistry provides the backdrop for a childhood in Germany, far removed from the graphic intensity that would later define his hand. After completing his schooling at the Gymnasium, the path shifts toward the visual. He enrolls in the Kunstgewerbeschule Nürnberg, where the foundations of his technical skill begin to take shape through formal instruction.
The momentum carries him toward Munich. In 1907, Wirsching enters the Munich Academy, placing himself under the guidance of Gabriel von Hackl. The academic rigor of the academy provides the necessary structure for his developing eye. By 1910, his trajectory reaches a new peak as he becomes a master student of Hugo von Habermann. This period of intense study marks the transition from a student of craft to a disciplined practitioner of the arts.
Travels and Artistic Studies
The academic path leads from the Kunstgewerbeschule Nürnberg to the Munich Academy. In 1907, Wirsching begins his studies under Gabriel von Hackl. By 1910, he has ascended to the position of Meisterschüler under Hugo von Habermann. This period of formal instruction provides the technical foundation for his dual identity as a painter and woodcutter.
Movement defines his early years. In 1909, he sets out on a foot travel through Italy and Corsica. The landscape shifts in 1910 as he arrives in Paris. His focus turns toward the heavy weight of history in 1911. He spends time in the Uffizi in Florence and the Prado in Madrid, where he works to replicate the Old Masters. These sessions of copying are not mere exercises; they are direct confrontations with the masters of the past.
Life in Dachau and Graphic Work
On July 1, 1914, Wirsching marries the academic painter Aranka Kovács. The couple settles at the Pollnhof near Dachau, a property situated on the Pollnbach stream. Life here centers around the estate and the arrival of their son in 1917. Because of a heart defect, Wirsching remains exempt from military service during the First World War, allowing him to remain in Dachau while the conflict unfolds.
The focus of his output shifts toward graphic arts. He begins designing entire books for Walter Blumtritt’s Dachauer Einhorn-Verlag. His woodcuts and illustrations become a central part of his creative life in this period. He works with precision, translating complex themes into stark, graphic forms.

Key Graphic and Painted Works
The graphic output of Wirsching finds its weight in the woodcuts produced during his time in Dachau. He creates the folder Vom Totentanz anno 1915, a series of ten woodcuts. This focus on printmaking continues into 1918 when he produces a folder for Hamlet. These works reflect a shift toward the graphic precision required for his collaborations with the Einhorn-Verlag.
His painted works offer a different texture. In Musizierender Pan, an oil on cardboard measuring approximately 69x38cm, two girls listen to the music of the shepherd god in a spring landscape. The scene includes playing satyrs and a seated female figure in the background. Elsewhere, his brushwork captures the landscape of his residence. The Pollnhof near Dachau remains part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Munich.
